In short
This law amends and expands the Maritime Jurisdiction Act of 1959, primarily by extending the exclusive fishery limits of the State and defining which foreign fishing vessels may operate within these limits.
What it regulates
- The extent of the exclusive fishery limits of the State.
- Which foreign states' fishing vessels are allowed to fish within specific portions of these limits.
- The conditions and timelines under which foreign fishing vessels may operate in certain areas.
- The power of the Government to issue, amend, or revoke orders related to these fishing rights.
Who it concerns
- The Government, which has the power to set and amend fishing regulations.
- Fishing vessels from other states that wish to fish in the exclusive fishery limits of the State.
Key points
- The exclusive fishery limits of the State are extended to a line where every point is 12 nautical miles from the nearest point of the baseline.
- The Government can specify which states' fishing vessels may fish in the portion of the exclusive fishery limits beyond 6 nautical miles from the baseline.
- For the area between 3 and 6 nautical miles from the baseline, the Government can specify states whose vessels may fish until the end of 1965 (for low-water mark areas) or 1966 (for other areas).
- Orders made by the Government can apply differently to various states and vessels, and can restrict fishing to particular fish stocks or grounds.
