In short
This law amends and extends the Control of Imports Acts of 1934 and 1937, primarily by allowing the government to exempt certain imported goods from quota restrictions based on their country of origin or consignment.
What it regulates
- The power to exempt goods from import prohibitions set by quota orders.
- The conditions under which goods can be exempted from these prohibitions.
- The application of these exemptions to both new and existing quota orders.
Who it concerns
- The Government, specifically regarding their power to issue quota orders and exemptions.
- Importers of goods, whose imports may be subject to or exempted from quota orders.
- The Revenue Commissioners, who must be satisfied with the origin or consignment of goods for exemption.
Key points
- The Government can exempt goods from import prohibitions if they are manufactured or produced in a specified country or countries.
- Goods can also be exempted if they are consigned to the importer from a specified country or countries.
- Exemptions can apply if goods are both manufactured/produced in and consigned from the same specified country or countries.
- These exemption powers apply to quota orders made under section 3 of the Principal Act, including those already in existence before this Act was passed.
