APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE FOR THE BRUSH AND BROOM TRADE (CONFIRMATION OF RULES) ORDER, 1953. I, SEAN F. LEMASS, Minister for Industry and Commerce, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by Section 9 of the Apprenticeship Act, 1931 (No. 56 of 1931), and of every and any other power me in this behalf enabling, hereby order as follows :— 1. This Order may be cited as the Apprenticeship Committee for the Brush and Broom Trade (Confirmation of Rules) Order, 1953. 2. The Interpretation Act, 1937 (No. 38 of 1937), applies to this Order. 3. The rules set out in the Schedule to this Order are hereby confirmed, and shall come into operation on the 27th day of July, 1953. SCHEDULE The Rules of the Apprenticeship Committee for the Brush and Broom Trade, as set out in the Schedule to the Apprenticeship Committee for the Brush and Broom Trade (Confirmation of Rules) Order, 1937 ( S. R. & O. No. 39 of 1937 ) are hereby amended as follows :— PART I. SECTION I—APPRENTICESHIP CLASSIFICATION RULES In the paragraph relating to male apprentices the word " one " shall be deleted and the word " two " substituted therefor ; and the following words shall be added at the end : " Provided always that instruction in the second or any subsequent branch shall commence not later than 15 months after the commencement of instruction in the branch last previously commenced." SECTION III—RULES REGULATING MINIMUM RATES OF WAGES Male Apprentices : (
  4. a)Paragraph

(1)shall be deleted and the following paragraph substituted— "
(1)Minimum Time-Rates— The minimum rates to be paid to male apprentices employed on time-work shall be equivalent to the General Minimum Time-Rates specified in Notice B.B. (N. 2) issued by the Brush and Broom Joint Labour Committee, Schedule I, Part I, Section II, as the same may be amended or varied from time to time." (b) In paragraph
(2)the reference to Schedule I, Part II, of the Notice B.B. (N. 57) dated 13th December, 1935, issued by the Brush and Broom Trade Board shall be replaced by a reference to the corresponding Schedule and Part of the Notice B.B. (N. 2) dated 8th January, 1948, issued by the Brush and Broom Joint Labour Committee, as amended by any subsequent such Notice issued by the said Joint Labour Committee in lieu thereof. (c) In paragraph
(3)the reference " Schedule I, Part II, Section I " shall be substituted for the reference " Schedule I, Part I, Section 1 " wherever it occurs ; and references to " determinations of the Brush and Broom Joint Labour Committee " shall be substituted for references to " determinations of the Brush and Broom Trade Board." (d) Paragraph
(4)shall be deleted and replaced by the following :— "
(4)Male Apprentices' Minimum Wages : During (
  1. a)the first four months of employment by way of apprenticeship, and (
  2. b)the first three months of employment by way of apprenticeship in a Branch of the Trade other than that in which the period of apprenticeship was commenced. Male Apprentices shall receive Four-fifths of the General Minimum Time-Rate for the time being fixed by the Brush and Broom Joint Labour Committee for male workers under 15 years of age during the said period (
  3. a)above and Five-fifths of the said rate during the period (
  4. b)above." Female Apprentices (
  5. a)In paragraphs
(1)and
(2)the references to Schedule II, Parts I, II and III, of the Notice B.B. (N.57) dated 13th December, 1935, issued by the Brush and Broom Trade Board shall be replaced by references to the corresponding Schedule and parts in Notice B.B. (N. 2) dated 8th January, 1948, issued by the Brush and Broom Joint Labour Committee, as amended by any subsequent such Notice issued by the said Joint Labour Committee in lieu thereof. (b) Paragraph
(3)shall be deleted and replaced by the following :— "
(3)The guaranteed time-rate of hourly wages of Female Apprentices employed on Piece-work shall be as follows :— Period of Apprenticeship Rate fixed in B.B. (N. 2) Schedule I, Part V (or any amendment thereof) for female workers 1st half-year Under 14½ years 2nd half-year From 14½ to 15 years 3rd half-year " 15 to 15½ years 4th half-year " 15½ to 16 years 5th half-year " 16 to 16½ years 6th half-year " 16½ to 17 years Provided that on reaching the age of 18 an apprentice shall be entitled to the wages of a female worker of 18 years and over if she has then entered upon her 6th half-year, but in any event she shall be entitled to such wages if she has passed her 18th birthday as soon as she completes her 5th half-year or, irrespective of length of apprenticeship served, on attaining 18½ years of age." (c) Paragraph
(4)shall be deleted. PART II SECTION III—RULES REGULATING MINIMUM RATES OF WAGES (a) in paragraphs
(1)and
(2)the references to the Schedule and Parts of Notice B.B. (N. 58) dated 2nd December, 1935, issued by the Brush and Broom Trade Board shall be replaced by references to the corresponding Schedule and Parts of the Notice B.B. (N. 2) dated 8th January, 1948, issued by the Brush and Broom Joint Labour Committee, as amended by any subsequent such Notice issued by the said Joint Labour Committee in lieu thereof. (b) Paragraph
