MILK FOR MOTHERS AND CHILDREN REGULATIONS, 1954. The Minister for Health, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 5 of the Health Act, 1947 (No. 28 of 1947), and section 24 of the Health Act, 1953 (No. 26 of 1953), hereby makes the following regulations :— 1. These regulations may be cited as the Milk for Mothers and Children Regulations, 1954. 2.—
(1)In these regulations— " the Minister " means the Minister for Health ; " the Act " means the Health Act, 1953 (No. 26 of 1953).
(2)References in these regulations to milk shall, except where the context otherwise requires, include references to such foods as may for the time being be approved of by the Minister under sub-section
(3)of section 24 of the Act. 3. The prescribed conditions under which a supply of milk under section 24 of the Act may be made available for a woman who is an expectant mother or a nursing mother shall be— (
- a)that a certificate in such of the forms set out in the Schedule to these regulations as may be appropriate, or in a form substantially to the like effect, signed by a registered medical practitioner or a registered midwife who is attending or has attended the woman, shall have been sent to the health authority in respect of the woman ; (
- b)that the supply of milk for a woman will not exceed one pint per day or, where dried milk or condensed milk is supplied, a quantity equivalent to one pint of liquid milk ; (
- c)that a supply of milk to a nursing mother will not be given later than the end of the sixth month after the birth of the child. 4. The prescribed conditions under which a supply of milk under section 24 of the Act may be made available for a child to whom that section applies shall be— (
- a)that the quantity of milk supplied daily in respect of the children of any family shall not exceed— (
- i)one pint in respect of each child under six months of age ; (
- ii)where there is one and only one child between the ages of six months and five years in the family, one pint in respect of that child ; (iii) where there are two or more children between the ages of six months and five years in the family, one pint in respect of the first such child and a half of a pint in respect of each other such child, or, where dried milk or condensed milk is supplied, a quantity equivalent to the appropriate quantity of liquid milk; (
- b)that foods derived wholly or mainly from milk, other than dried milk and condensed milk, shall not be supplied save in accordance with such conditions as may be approved or directed by the Minister from time to time.
