MERCHANT SHIPPING (RECOGNITION OF MISCELLANEOUS FOREIGN CERTIFICATES OF COMPETENCY) ORDER, 1957. WHEREAS the governments of India, South Africa, Hong Kong and Singapore provide for the holding of examinations for the grants of certificates of competency as masters, first mates or second mates of foreign-going ships, as first class or second class engineers or as first class or second class motor engineers : AND WHEREAS the government of the Federation of Malaya provide for the holding of examinations for the grants of certificates of competency as masters or as first mates or second mates of foreign-going ships : AND WHEREAS the Minister for Industry and Commerce is satisfied that the certificates so granted are granted on such principles as to show qualifications of competency which are adequate qualification for service in Irish ships : NOW, the Government, in exercise of the powers conferred on them by section 7 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1947 (No. 46 of 1947), hereby order as follows : 1. This Order may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Recognition of Miscellaneous Foreign Certificates of Competency) Order, 1957. 2. The certificates referred to in the recitals to this Order shall be of the same force within the State as if they had been granted by the Minister for Industry and Commerce under Part II of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894. This Order provides that certain certificates of competency as ships' officers granted in India, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Federation of Malaya shall be recognised for service on Irish vessels.
