The Minister for Social Welfare, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by sections 3 and 12 of the Social Welfare Act, 1952 (No. 11 of 1952) hereby makes the following Regulations:— 1. (
  4. i)These Regulations may be cited as the Social Welfare (Modifications of Insurance) (Amendment) Regulations, 1973. (
  5. ii)These Regulations and the Social Welfare (Modifications of Insurance) Regulations, 1956 to 1972, may be cited together as the Social Welfare (Modifications of Insurance) Regulations, 1956 to 1973. 2. In these Regulations— "the Principal Regulations" means the Social Welfare (Modifications of Insurance) Regulations, 1956 ( S.I. No. 236 of 1956 ). 3. Article 5 of the Principal Regulations is hereby amended by the insertion in paragraph (
  6. b)of sub-article

(2)thereof of the words, "deserted wife's benefit" after the words "widow's (contributory) pension".

Article 6 of the Principal Regulations is hereby amended by the deletion from paragraph (b) thereof of the words "widow's (contributory) pension where such pension is granted in respect of widowhood arising before the current period of employment" and the substitution therefor of the words "widow's (contributory) pension or deserted wife's benefit where such pension or benefit is granted in respect of widowhood or desertion arising before the current period of employment".   3. RICHIE RYAN, Minister for Finance. EXPLANATORY NOTE. The Social Welfare (Modifications of Insurance) Regulations, 1956 ( S.I. No. 236 of 1956 ) provide for special rates of employment contributions covering only insurance for widows' and orphans' pensions in the case of certain permanent and pensionable employees of the State, of local or other public or statutory authorities, teachers etc. These Regulations provide that the employment contributions in question will also be reckonable for the purposes of deserted wife's benefit. The Regulations also provide that payment of deserted wife's benefit may be made to a serving member of the Army Nursing Service in circumstances similar to those in which payment of widow's contributory pension may be made.
