The Minister for the Environment, in exercise of the powers conferred on him by section 3 of the European Communities Act, 1972 (No. 27 of 1972) and for the purpose of giving effect to the Council Directive of 29th June, 1978, No. 78/611/EEC*, hereby makes the following Regulations:— *O.J. No. L 197/19, 22/7/'78. 1.

(1)These Regulations may be cited as the European Communities (Lead Content of Petrol) (Amendment) Regulations, 1982.
(2)These Regulations shall come into operation on the 1st day of September,
  1. In these Regulations "the Principal Regulations" means the European Communities (Lead Content of Petrol) Regulations, 1980 ( S.I. No. 372 of 1980 ). 3.
(1)Article 3
(1)of the Principal Regulations is hereby amended by the substitution therein of "0.40 grammes per litre" for "0.64 grammes per litre".
(2)Article 4 of the Principal Regulations is hereby amended by—the addition thereto of the following sub-article— "
(7)Samples for the purposes of these Regulations shall be taken in accordance with British Standard BS 3195: Part 1: 1978 (relating to methods for sampling petroleum products. Part 1—Liquid hydrocarbons—Manual sampling), published by the British Standards Institution." GIVEN under the Official Seal of the Minister for the Environment this 23rd day of July, 1982. RAPHAEL P. The European Communities (Lead Content of Petrol) Regulations 1980 gave effect to the Council Directive of the European Communities of 29th June, 1978 (78/611/EEC) on the approximation of the laws of Member States relating to the lead compound content of petrol and prohibited the marketing in the State of petrol, the lead compound content of which, expressed as lead, exceeded 0.64 grammes per litre. These amending Regulations provide for the reduction of the maximum permissible lead compound content to 0.40 grammes per litre.
