Acts Referred to Courts of Justice Act, 1936 1936, No. 48 Criminal Justice Act, 1990 1990, No. 16 Summary Jurisdiction (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1871 1871, c. 76 Number 11 of 1993 CRIMINAL LAW (SUICIDE) ACT, 1993 AN ACT TO ABOLISH THE OFFENCE OF SUICIDE, TO MAKE IT AN OFFENCE TO BE AN ACCOMPLICE TO SUICIDE AND TO REPEAL SECTION 9 OF THE SUMMARY JURISDICTION (IRELAND) AMENDMENT ACT, 1871 . [9th June, 1993] BE IT ENACTED BY THE OIREACHTAS AS FOLLOWS: Short title and commencement. 1.—
(1)This Act may be cited as the Criminal Law (Suicide) Act, 1993.
(2)This Act shall come into operation one month after the date of its passing. Suicide. 2.—
(1)Suicide shall cease to be a crime.
(2)A person who aids, abets, counsels or procures the suicide of another, or an attempt by another to commit suicide, shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for a term not exceeding fourteen years.
(3)If, on the trial of an indictment for murder, murder to which section 3 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1990 applies or manslaughter, it is proved that the person charged aided, abetted, counselled or procured the suicide of the person alleged to have been killed, he may be found guilty of an offence under this section.
(4)No proceedings shall be instituted for an offence under this section except by or with the consent of the Director of Public Prosecutions. Repeal. 3.— Section 9 of the Summary Jurisdiction (Ireland) Amendment Act, 1871 (amended by section 85 of the Courts of Justice Act, 1936 ) is hereby repealed.
