No. 279 of 2008 ROADS ACT 2007 (DECLARATION OF MOTORWAYS) ORDER 2008 Notice of the making of this Statutory Instrument was published in “Iris Oifigiúil” of 22nd July, 2008. I, NOEL DEMPSEY, Minister for Transport, on the application of the National Roads Authority, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 8
(1)of the Roads Act 2007 (No. 34 of 2007), and having complied with the requirements of subsection
(2)of that section, hereby order as follows: 1.
(1)This Order may be cited as the Roads Act 2007 (Declaration of Motorways) Order 2008.
(2)This Order comes into operation on 24 September
- The national roads or proposed road developments mentioned in the Schedule are declared as motorways. SCHEDULE SECTIONS OF NATIONAL ROADS AND PROPOSED ROAD DEVELOPMENTS DECLARED AS MOTORWAYS Reference in this Schedule to— N followed by a number is a reference to a national road, and R followed by a number is a reference to a regional road N6 — Kinnegad to Kilbeggan The section of the N6 between its junction with the N4 at Rossan in County Meath and its junction with the N52 at Kilbeggan South in County Westmeath, via the townlands of Kinnegad, Rattin, Farthingstown, Rathgarrett, Kilcloghan and Ardnaglew in County Westmeath. N6 — Kilbeggan to Athlone The section of the proposed N6 between its junction with the N52 at Kilbeggan South in County Westmeath and its junction with the existing N6 at Creggan Lower in County Westmeath, via the townlands of Kilgaroan and Kilbeg in County Westmeath, Ardnucher, Glebe, Russagh, Kilcurley, Moyally and Cloghnamina in County Offaly and Culleenagower, Cregganmacar, Seeoge and Creggan Upper in County Westmeath. N7 — Castletown to Nenagh The section of the proposed N7 from its junction with the R435 at Derrinsallagh in County Laois and its junction with the R445 at Ballintotty in the county of North Tipperary, via the townlands of Clonagooden and Curraghmore in County Laois, Ballykelly, Camlin, Glenbeha, Boola and Rathnaveoge Lower in the county of North Tipperary, Castleroan, Moneygall, and Clynoe in County Offaly and Park, Kilgorteen and Lissanisky in the county of North Tipperary. N7 — Nenagh to Limerick The section of the proposed N7 between its junction with the R445 at Ballintotty in the county of North Tipperary and its junction with the R503 at Carrowkeel in County Limerick, via the townlands of Knockalton Upper, Tullahedy, Carrigatogher, Gortmore, Killalane, Lackenavea and Annaholty in the county of North Tipperary and Gooig, Sallymount and Lisnagry in County Limerick. N8 — Cashel Bypass The section of the N8 between its junction with the R639 at Gortmakellis and its junction with the N74 at Owen’s and Bigg’s Lott, via the townlands of Boscabell and Waller’s Lot in the county of South Tipperary. N8 — Urlingford to Cashel The section of the proposed N8 between its junction with the R693 at Islands in County Kilkenny and its junction with the R639 at Gortmakellis in the county of South Tipperary, via the townlands of Fennor and Graiguepadeen in the county of South Tippearary, Longfordpass North, Borris, Kilnoe and Ashill in the county of North Tipperary and Aughnagomaun and Grangemore in the county of South Tipperary. N8 — Cashel to Mitchelstown The section of the proposed N8 between its junction with the N74 at Owen’s and Bigg’s Lott in the county of South Tipperary and its junction with the existing N8 at Carrigane in County Cork, via the townlands of Loughfeedora, Dogstown, Cloughabreedy, Clonmore South, Poulaculleare and Skeheenaranky in the county of South Tipperary, and Brackbaun and Churchquarter in County Limerick. N8 — Mitchelstown to Fermoy The section of the proposed N8 between its junction with the existing N8 at Carrigane and the R639 at Shanacloon in County Cork, via the townlands of Kilshanny, Ballynamona, Ballinglanna North, Gortnahown and Gortore. N9 — Kilcullen to Powerstown The section of the proposed N9 between its junction with the N78 at Knockbounce in County Kildare and its junction with the existing N9 at Cloghristick in County Carlow, via the townlands of Yellowbogcommon, Baronsland, Blackrath, Mullamast, Ballyvass, Prumplestown Lower and Ballyhade in County Kildare and Russelstown, Johnstown and Rathcrogue in County Carlow. GIVEN under my Official Seal, 17 July 2008 NOEL DEMPSEY Minister for Transport. EXPLANATORY NOTE (This note is not part of the Instrument and does not purport to be a legal interpretation). This Order gives effect to section 8 of the Roads Act, 2007 which provides for the declaration of certain public roads as motorways. On a motorway higher maximum speed limits may be set than on other public roads, access to specific types of road user or vehicle may be restricted, and protection can be afforded to the State’s investment in the national road network preventing premature obsolescence. This Order applies only to high quality dual carriageways which were already built, under construction or in planning when the Roads Act 2007 was enacted.
