The Council of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland, in exercise of the functions conferred on the said Society by section 11 of the Pharmacy Act 2007 (No. 20 of 2007), with the consent of the Minister for Health, hereby makes the following rules:— Citation 1. These Rules may be cited as the Pharmaceutical Society of Ireland (Education and Training required to prescribe medicinal products in accordance with a Common Conditions Service) Rules 2025. Interpretation 2. In these Rules— “CPD” means the continuing professional development for pharmacists referred to in section 7
(1)(d) of the Pharmacy Act, 2007 (No. 20 of 2007); “Common Conditions Service” means a service that may be provided by a registered pharmacist practising in a retail pharmacy business in accordance with regulations made under section 32 of the Irish Medicines Board Act 1995 , as amended. Standard to be Reached 3.
(1)The education and training which a registered pharmacist must receive to enable him or her to prescribe specified medicinal products in accordance with regulations made under Section 32 of the Irish Medicines Board Act 1995 , as amended, will enable him or her to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of: (
- a)The applicable legal and ethical responsibilities associated with prescribing, and (
- b)the regulatory framework pertaining to the operation of a Common Conditions Service in the State. Specified education and training to be received 4.
(1)In order to be able to prescribe specified medicinal products in accordance with regulations made under Section 32 of the Irish Medicines Board Act 1995 , as amended, a registered pharmacist must successfully complete: (
- a)Such CPD modules through the Irish Institute of Pharmacy (IIOP) or as directed by the Council, as are required in order to reach the standard specified in Rule 3; (
- b)equivalent continuing professional education; and/or (
