I, DARRAGH O’BRIEN, Minister for Transport, in exercise of the powers conferred on me by section 10 of the Merchant Shipping (Safety Convention) Act 1952 (No. 29 of 1952) (inserted by section 7
(1)of the Merchant Shipping Act 2010 (No. 14 of 2010)), section 3 of the Merchant Shipping Act 1966 (No. 20 of 1966), as amended by section 12 of the Merchant Shipping Act 2010 , section 84 of the Merchant Shipping Act 2010 (as adapted by the Transport, Tourism and Sport (Alteration of Name of Department and Title of Minister) Order 2020 ( S.I. No. 351 of 2020 )), and for the purpose of giving effect to the provisions of Chapter II-2 of the annex to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea, 1974, hereby make the following rules: 1. These Rules may be cited as the Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) (Amendment) Rules 2025. 2. Schedule 15 to the Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) Rules 2023 ( S.I. No. 379 of 2023 ) is amended: (a) in the third entry relating to Drogheda, by substituting for the matter in column
(3), for: “In Winter: No partially smooth waters” the following: “In Winter: In favourable weather only, within a radius of 1.3 nautical miles from the eastern tip of the north breakwater and terminating at the northern and southern foreshores respectively for vessels engaged in dredging operations only.”; (b) in the seventh entry relating to Howth Sound, by substituting for the matter in column
(3), “Within a line from the North end of Eastern Breakwater to Thulla and south of a line drawn westward from Steer Rock”. GIVEN under my Official Seal, 5 March, 2025. These Rules amend Schedule 15, Areas of Smooth Waters and Partially Smooth Waters, to the Merchant Shipping (Fire Protection) Rules 2023 ( S.I. No. 379 of 2023 ) in relation to the description of Areas of Partially Smooth Waters in Drogheda and Howth Sound.
