In short
This law amends previous Vocational Education Acts, primarily by adjusting the financial contributions from local authorities to vocational education committees and introducing children's allowances for certain teachers and their widows.
What it regulates
- The maximum annual financial contribution that local rating authorities must pay to vocational education committees.
- The payment of children's allowances to retired or deceased teachers whose salary was based on their marital status.
- Clarifies that children's allowances and rent allowances are not considered for teacher superannuation purposes.
Who it concerns
- Local rating authorities and vocational education committees.
- Retired teachers and widows of deceased teachers whose salaries were differentiated on a marriage basis.
Key points
- The maximum annual liability for rating authorities is set at eighteen pence in the pound for specific areas (Dublin, Sligo, Drogheda, Tralee, Cork, Longford) and fifteen pence in the pound for all other areas, effective from April 1, 1954.
- Vocational education committees may pay children's allowances to eligible teachers and their widows, with rates and conditions determined by the Minister for Education with the consent of the Minister for Finance, for periods starting on or after October 1, 1952.
- Children's allowances and rent allowances paid to teachers are not to be included when calculating their superannuation.
- This Act, along with the Vocational Education Acts, 1930 to 1950, are to be read and cited together as the Vocational Education Acts, 1930 to 1953.
