In short
This law amends and extends existing electricity supply acts, primarily by allowing the Minister for Transport and Power to contribute to the cost of connecting certain premises to the electricity supply and by amending superannuation provisions for Electricity Supply Board employees.
What it regulates
- Contributions by the Minister for Transport and Power towards the cost of connecting certain premises to electricity supply.
- The terms under which the Electricity Supply Board (the Board) must provide electricity supply to premises that receive such contributions.
- Amendments to the Electricity Supply Board (Superannuation) Act, 1942, regarding superannuation benefits.
- The payment of expenses incurred by the Minister in administering this Act.
Who it concerns
- Owners or occupiers of certain premises in rural areas that were quoted terms for electricity connection under a State-subsidised programme.
- The Electricity Supply Board (the Board).
- The Minister for Transport and Power and the Minister for Finance.
- Contributing members of the Electricity Supply Board's general employees or manual workers superannuation schemes.
Key points
- The Minister may contribute to the cost of connecting premises to electricity supply if the capital cost of connection exceeded £700 and the premises were quoted terms under the State-subsidised rural electrification programme but remain unconnected.
- The amount of the Minister's contribution for particular premises will be the portion of the capital cost exceeding £700 that the Board could not otherwise recover.
- The total amount of contributions under this section shall not exceed £300,000.
- If a contribution is made, the Board must supply electricity to those premises on terms applicable to premises where the capital cost of connection was £700.
- Schemes amending the general employees or manual workers superannuation schemes may provide for additional superannuation benefits for contributing members who retire or are discharged due to ill-health.
