SEIMAS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA STATEMENT CONCERNING THE SITUATION OF FREIGHT TRANSPORT AT THE LATVIAN-LITHUANIAN BORDER 28 November 2006 Vilnius Long queues of freight vehicles have recently formed at the Latvian-Lithuanian border (especially at the border-crossing point of Smėlynė). Despite efforts of the executive bodies of the Republic of Lithuania, this critical situation at the Latvian-Lithuanian border has not changed and, judging from the statements of the authorities of the Republic of Latvia – will not change in the near future. The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania emphasising that one of the main principles of the European Union is free movement of persons and goods within the European Union; critically evaluating the situation of freight transport at the Latvian-Lithuanian border; drawing attention to the fact that a lot of the reasons, declared by the authorities of the Republic of Latvia regarding queues at the border, have not proved true, calls on the Saema of the Republic of Latvia and requests to take immediate actions to eliminate discrimination against the carriers travelling from the territory of the Republic of Lithuania, and invites to appeal to the European Parliament and the European Commission for financial assistance in solving the problems relating to the development and improvement of the infrastructure of the external Eastern border of the European Union.
