RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION Resolution On Harmonizing the Legislation of the Baltic States The Baltic Assembly, taking into account that the creation of a common economic space of the Baltic States and their preparation for the accession to the European Union requires the harmonization of the basic provisions of laws in these countries and the approximation of the said laws to the European standards, considering that the Seimas of Lithuania has already established the procedure according to which all draft laws of major significance, debated by the Seimas, are accompanied by a reference on how the relevant issues are regulated by Estonian and Latvian laws, recommends that the parliaments of the Baltic States: 1. Demand that most significant draft laws submitted to the parliament for debate be accompanied by a reference on how the relevant issues are regulated in the other Baltic States and what resolutions and directives on these issues have been adopted in the European Union. 2. When drafting codes or other major legislative acts hold mutual consultations, workshops and scientific conferences on the relevant issues. Rîga, October 6, 1996
