RESOLUTION OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA official translation GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA RESOLUTION REGARDING THE RESTRICTION OF THE IMPORT, PRODUCTION AND USE OF ASBESTOS AND PRODUCTS CONTAING ASBESTOS No.1163 28 September 1998 Vilnius Acting in compliance with Article 26 of the Law on Environmental Protection of the Republic of Lithuania and seeking to diminish the danger to human health and the environment of asbestos and products containing asbestos, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania has r e s o l v e d:
- To establish that import into the territory of the Republic of Lithuania of the articles listed below shall be prohibited: 1.
- import of sheets and corrugated sheets of asbestos-cement (CN code 6811.20) - from 2 January 2001; 1.
- import of asbestos (CN code 2524.00) and of tubes, pipes and pipe fittings of asbestos-cement (CN code 6811.30.00) - from 1 January
- To charge the Ministry of Health Care, the Ministry of Social Security and Labour and the Ministry of the Environment to draft and approve, by 31 March 1999, hygiene normative documents regulating the use of asbestos and articles of asbestos, taking into account that articles of asbestos have already been adapted in buildings that are being used.
- To prohibit in the Republic of Lithuania: 3.
- the use of sheets and corrugated sheets of asbestos-cement for roofing in residential houses and public buildings (hospitals, schools, nursery schools etc.) - as of 1 January 2000; 3.
- the use of sheets and corrugated sheets of asbestos-cement for roofing in other building under construction - as of 1 January 2002; 3.
- the production of sheets and corrugated sheets of asbestos-cement for roofing - as of 1 January 2001; 3.
- the production of tubes and pipe fittings from asbestos-cement - as of 1 January
- To charge the Ministry of the Environment to: 4.
- organise, from 1 January 2001, the production of sheets for roofing containing no asbestos, intended for the repair of slated roofs; 4.2 to prepare and approve, by 31 December 1999, the procedure for disposing of asbestos and articles containing asbestos as well as the requirements for setting up and using their dumping sites; 4.
- to prepare, in conjunction with the Ministry of Social Security and Labour, the Ministry of Health Care and the Ministry of Economy, and to present, by 30 November 1999, to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania for approval the programme for the restriction of import, production and use of articles containing asbestos, which have not been referred to in the Resolution.
- The Resolution shall not apply to asbestos products carried in transit through the territory of the Republic of Lithuania or to the said products brought into the customs warehouses if they are intended for re-export in their present state.
