RESOLUTION

RESOLUTION SEIMAS OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA RESOLUTION ON ESTABLISHING AN INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION OF EXPERTS 3 December 1998 Vilnius The Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania, taking into consideration the provisions and recommendations of 22 October 1998 European Parliament Resolution A4-0354/98, stating “whereas closure and decommissioning of the nuclear installations for political reasons, before reaching the natural end of their operability, is not economically justified and results in a high financial burden on citizens and tax-payers” and “that scientific expertise, sound economic assessment of the real costs, and clear scientific evidence should always be considered prior to any decision taken in respect to the operation or closure of nuclear installations”, recommends to the Government of the Republic of Lithuania to initiate establishing or to establish an international group of experts in nuclear safety and economy which would submit conclusions with regard to the possible terms of operational life of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Station. Also mindful of a possibility that the international group of experts may recommend to disregard the design parameters and time limits and advise on a shorter operational period of the nuclear plant units, the Seimas calls on the Government of the Republic of Lithuania to start negotiations right away with G-7 countries and European Union institutions concerning a possibility of free aid and other financial support.
