Imposition of Duties (Confirmation of Orders) Act, 1971

In short

This law confirms specific orders that were made to impose duties, primarily related to customs and excise duties, under two earlier Acts. It legally validates these previously issued orders.

What it regulates

  • The confirmation of various orders concerning the imposition of duties.
  • Changes to excise duty on Irish wines and customs duty on still wines from the United Kingdom.
  • Reductions of protective duties on certain goods of United Kingdom origin.
  • The imposition of customs duty on certain mobile structures.
  • Conversion of duty rates to decimal form and minor changes in the customs tariff.

Who it concerns

  • Those involved in the import and export of goods, particularly wines, certain goods from the United Kingdom, and mobile structures.
  • Individuals or businesses affected by excise and customs duties.

Key points

  • The Act confirms five specific orders, identified by their Statutory Instrument (S.I.) numbers: S.I. No. 132 of 1970, S.I. No. 133 of 1970, S.I. No. 154 of 1970, S.I. No. 268 of 1970, and S.I. No. 307 of 1970.
  • One order (S.I. No. 132 of 1970) increased excise duty on Irish wines and reduced customs duty on certain UK wines.
  • Another order (S.I. No. 133 of 1970) implemented the fifth reduction of protective duties on certain UK goods and maintained import duty preference for certain Northern Ireland goods.
  • S.I. No. 154 of 1970 imposed a customs duty on certain mobile structures.
  • S.I. No. 307 of 1970 reduced customs duty rates on certain watches, watch cases, and watch movements.
