THE MALTA GEORGE CROSS ANNIVERSARY MEDAL [ S.L.251.02 1 SUBSIDIARY LEGISLATION 251.02 THE MALTA GEORGE CROSS ANNIVERSARY MEDAL RULES 17th January, 1992 LEGAL NOTICE 8 of 1992, as amended by Legal Notice 35 of 1994. 1. The title of these rules is The Malta George Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Medal Rules. Title. 2.
(1)There shall be struck a medal to be known as "the Malta George Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Medal" (hereinafter in these rules referred to as "the Medal") to be awarded in accordance with these Rules. Striking of Medal.
(2)Awards of the Medal shall have effect on April 15, 1992. 3.
(1)The Medal shall be circular, in cupro-nickel and 36mm in diameter, bearing on the obverse a representation of the Emblem of Malta and the year "1992" in base, and on the reverse the British George Cross in the centre, encircled by the words "B }ALA XHIEDA TA’ EROI|MU U DEDIKAZZJONI" and "TO BEAR WITNESS TO HEROISM AND DEVOTION" separated by a Maltese cross in chief and the date "1942" in base, all in relief; the whole being suspended from a bar within relief an olive branch and palm frond joined in the centre. Insignia.
(2)The Medal is suspended from a riband 32mm in width being blue with two narrow central vertical stripes, white and red, each 3mm in width; the whole having a moire effect.
(3)On appropriate occasions a miniature of the insignia may be worn, which shall measure approximately 18mm in diameter, with the ribbon 16mm in width. 4.
(1)Eligibility for the Medal shall be restricted to: (
- a)All former uniformed members of the Allied Armed Forces and Mercantile Marine who, at any time during the qualifying period, served (
- i)(
- ii)in Malta; or in air or sea operations in the Mediterranean connected with the defence, relief or supply of Malta, including participation in convoys and their escorts; or (iii) in operations mounted from Malta against the Axis Forces; (
- b)Civilians who, at any time during the qualifying period, were in Malta in one of the following categories: (
- i)(
- ii)Malta Police Force personnel and Special Constables; Malta Dockyard Police and Malta Dockyard Eligibility. Amended by: L.N. 35 of 1994. 2 [ S.L.251.02 THE MALTA GEORGE CROSS ANNIVERSARY MEDAL personnel who served with the Dockyard Defence Battery; (iii) Nursing members of the Voluntary Aid Detachment, the Red Cross and St John Ambulance, who served in naval, military and civil hospitals; (
- iv)Malta Civil Defence personnel (Air Raid Precautions); (
- v)Malta Auxiliary Corps; (
- vi)Malta Volunteer Defence Force or Home Guard; (vii) Fire Brigade; and (viii) District Commissioners, Regional Protection Officers and Protection Officers; and (
- c)The Scout Association of Malta for service during the qualifying period.
(2)Persons considering themselves eligible for the award of the Medal are to complete the official application form as set out in the Schedule, and return this, duly certified by the particular organisation to which they belonged, or by such authority as holds the records of that organisation, to the Chairman of the Nominations Committee, Malta George Cross Fiftieth Anniversary Medal, Office of the Prime Minister, Auberge de Castille, Valletta, Malta, not later than the 15th April, 1994: Provided that Maltese citizens falling under sub-rule
(1)(b) may instead of such certification produce the discharge certificate from the relative organisation.
(3)Qualifying period. Presentation. The Medal may not be awarded posthumously. 5. The qualifying period for the award of the Medal shall be the period between June 10, 1940 and September 8, 1943, both dates inclusive. 6.
(1)The Medal shall be presented - (
- a)by the President of Malta; or (
- b)by any High Commissioner, Ambassador, other diplomatic or consular representative (including honorary representative) of Malta, or any other person so authorised, to make the award in the name of the President: Provided that, where it shall not be convenient or practical for the presentation to be made in person, the Medal may be delivered by registered post or such other means as may be considered expedient.
(2)When Medals are presented by the President, he shall address recipients as follows: "On behalf of the Government and people, I confer on you the National Commemorative Medal to mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta.".
(3)The representative of the President shall address recipients THE MALTA GEORGE CROSS ANNIVERSARY MEDAL [ S.L.251.02 as follows: "In the name of the President of Malta, and on behalf of the Government and people of Malta, I confer on you the National Commemorative Medal to mark the Fiftieth Anniversary of the award of the George Cross to Malta.".
- Revocation of the award of the Medal shall be governed by the provisions of rule 17 of the Rules for Honours, Awards and Decorations, and articles 23 and 24 of the Gie] ir-Repubblika Act. Revocation. S.L.251.01 Cap.
