(1)The title of these bye-laws is the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the auspices of the Institute of Linguistics.

(2)Citation and interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the Institute of Linguistics; "the Degree" means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.; "the Institute" means the Institute of Linguistics; and "the Principal Regulations" means the Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. - Degree Regulations. S.L. 327.101 2. These bye-laws shall be applicable from October 2009 onwards. Applicability. 3. Applicants for the Degree offered by the Institute shall be in possession of one of the following degrees: Requirements for Admission. Substituted by: L.N. 352 of 2021. (

1. a)a Master’s degree in any area of study related to the proposed area of research; (
2. b)a Bachelor Honours degree with First Class Honours, in an area of study deemed by the Board as strongly related to the proposed area of research; (
3. c)qualifications which the Board deems to be appropriate and comparable to the degrees mentioned in paragraphs (
4. a)or (b). 4. When the Board deems it necessary, it may require students to successfully complete a number of study-units during the first part of their studies, as recommended by the Board, after approval from Senate. 5. The Board shall recommend to Senate the appointment of an Institute Doctoral Committee composed as follows: Institute Doctoral Committee. The Chairman of the Institute or delegate (chairman) Three members of the Institute. 6. Principal supervisors shall be required to submit a written report to the Board, through the Institute Doctoral Committee, every June for all students under their supervision. Suspenrision and students’ progress. 7. (1)After 12 months, and no more than 24 months of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study have elapsed, and after successful completion of any taught component or tasks assigned to the students under provisions of bye-law 4 of these bye-laws, students are required to submit a report which (

1. a)describes research undertaken up to that point; (
2. b)clearly describes a plan for research for the next 24 months of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study, identifying the significant contribution envisaged. This report shall be submitted for consideration by an ad hoc board appointed by the Board. The ad hoc board shall be composed of a chairperson, who shall be the chairperson of the Institute or their delegate, and two examiners, one of whom shall be the Principal Supervisor and the other a member of the Institute or of another faculty with expertise in the area.

(2)The ad hoc board shall examine the student orally and shall submit a written report for consideration by the Institute Doctoral Committee in the first instance. The report shall contain recommendations according to the provisions of the Principal Regulations. Research and teaching programmes.

1. Students registered at the Institute may be required to participate in the Institute’s research and teaching programmes. Thesis presentation.
2. Six months before the submission deadline students shall be reminded that they are required to inform the Institute that they will be submitting their thesis for examination not less than three months before the submission deadline. Board of Examiners.
3. The Board shall recommend to Senate the appointment of the Board of Examiners in accordance with the Principal Regulations. Format of thesis.

(1)) Students shall be required to submit an electronic copy of their thesis, which will be distributed to each member of the Board of Examiners. The officer in charge shall issue a dated receipt. A loosebound, printed copy of the thesis shall be made available to members of the Board of Examiners should they specifically request such a copy.

(2)On successful completion of their studies, students shall be required to submit to the Institute three hard bound copies of the thesis and one copy in digital format within six weeks from the publication of their result. One copy of the thesis shall be kept in the Library of the Institute and another at the University Library. Students who do not comply with this bye-law shall not be awarded the Degree.
