In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires – “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology; “the Course” means the programme of study leading to the d e g r e e o f B a c h e l o r o f S c i e n c e i n I n f o r m a t i o n Te c h n o l o g y (Honours) - B.Sc. IT (Hons); “the Degree” means the degree of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology (Honours) - B.Sc. IT (Hons); “the Diploma” means the Diploma in Information Technology; “the Higher Diploma” means the Higher Diploma in Information Technology; and “the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards,
3. These bye-laws shall be applicable commencing from 1 December 2019 onwards. for courses 3.

(1)The Degree shall be awarded in any one of the following areas of study: (

1. a)Artificial Intelligence; (
2. b)Computing and Business; (
3. c)Software Development. *These regulations have been repealed by Legal Notice 282 of 2022. Applicability. Amended by: L.N. 357 of 2017, L.N. 171 of 2017; L.N. 218 of 2018; L.N. 13 of 2020. (2)The areas of study offered in any particular year and the combinations that may or may not be chosen together shall be published by the Board at the time of the call for applications. Special course requirements for admission. Amended by: L.N. 357 of 2017, L.N. 171 of 2017; L.N. 181 of 2022. 4.

(1)* To be registered as regular students in the Course applicants shall: either (a) satisfy the special course requirements listed in paragraphs

(2)to

(4)of this bye-law; or (b) as from October 2023 onwards, be in possession of the Certificate in ICT Foundation Studies from this University.

(2)shall: Applicants for the Artificial Intelligence area of study either (

1. a)satisfy the general entry requirements as specified in the Admissions Regulations of the University and be in possession of: (
2. i)passes at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and in one of the following subjects: Applied Mathematics, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and Computing; and (
3. ii)a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in one of the following subjects (excluding the subjects presented at Advanced Matriculation Level): Physics, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Computing, Economics, English, Information Technology, Music, and Philosophy; or (
4. b)satisfy the general entry requirements as specified in the Admissions Regulations of the University and be in possession of two passes at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and Computing provided that one of these passes is at Advanced Matriculation Level and the other pass is at least at Intermediate Matriculation Level; or (
5. c)be in possession of: (
6. i)(
7. ii)a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics, or at a corresponding level of other examinations recognised by Senate for the purpose of the Admissions Regulations of the University; and either one of the following:

(1)the Diploma of the City and Guilds of London *This regulation shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2023 or later. IT (HONS) - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY [ S.L.327.270 Institute Course No. 7235 in Applied Information Technology; or

(2)the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in IT; or

(3)the MCAST Advanced Diploma in IT; or

(4)the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing, provided that students who lack a grade in only one of the subjects of the special course requirements required at Advanced Matriculation Level indicated in paragraphs (

1. a)and (
2. b)of this byelaw shall be admitted under those conditions as the Board may impose to compensate for the missing element. If, by the end of the first year, such students do not successfully complete all the requirements to progress regularly to the second year of the Course, they shall be required to withdraw from the Course and shall neither be entitled to repeat the year nor to progress conditionally as normally permitted under the Principal Regulations. For courses commencing in October 2019 or later:

(2)shall: Applicants for the Artificial Intelligence area of study either (

1. a)satisfy the general entry requirements as specified in the Admissions Regulations of the University and be in possession of two passes at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics and Computing provided that one of these passes is at Advanced Matriculation Level and the other pass is at least at Intermediate Matriculation Level; or (
2. b)be in possession of: (
3. i)a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics, or at a corresponding level of other examinations recognised by Senate for the purpose of the Admissions Regulations of the University; and (
4. ii)either one of the following:

(1)the Diploma of the City and Guilds of London Institute Course No. 7235 in Applied Information Technology; or

(2)the MCAST-BTEC Extended Diploma in IT; or

(3)the MCAST Advanced Diploma in IT; or

(4)the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing, provided that students who lack a grade in only one of the subjects of the special course requirements required at Advanced Matriculation Level indicated in paragraphs (

1. a)and (

3. ii)a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics at Grade C or better (if not offered at Advanced Matriculation Level); and (iii) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Computing or Information Technology (if not offered at Advanced Matriculation Level); or (
4. b)be in possession of: (
5. i)five passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination, including English Language and Maltese; and (
6. ii)a pass in Systems of Knowledge at Intermediate Matriculation Level; and (iii) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics, or at a corresponding level of other examinations recognised by Senate for the purpose of the Admission Regulations; and (
7. iv)any one of the following:

(1)the Diploma of the City and Guilds of London Institute Course No.7235 in Applied Information Technology;

(2)the MCAST-BTEC Higher National Diploma (HND) in Computing;

(3)any other qualification from a recognised institution considered by the Board to be equivalent to

(1)or

(2)above: DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HONOURS) - B.SC. 1. a)satisfy the general entry requirements as specified in the Admission Regulations of the University and be in possession of: (
2. i)passes at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in two of the following: Applied Mathematics, Computing, Information Technology, Economics, Pure Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, English, Philosophy, and Physics; and (
3. ii)a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics at Grade C or better (if not offered at Advanced Matriculation Level); and (iii) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Computing or Information Technology (if not offered at Advanced Matriculation Level); or (
4. b)be in possession of: (
5. i)five passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination, including English Language and Maltese; and (
6. ii)a pass in Systems of Knowledge at Intermediate Matriculation Level; and (iii) a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics, or at a corresponding level of other examinations recognised by Senate for the purpose of the Admission Regulations; and (

(2)above: Provided that students who lack a grade in only one of the subjects of the special course requirements required at Advanced Matriculation Level indicated in paragraph (a) of this bye-law shall be admitted under those conditions as the Board may impose to compensate for the missing element. If, by the end of the first year, such students do not successfully complete all the requirements to progress regularly to the second year of the course, they shall be required to withdraw from the course and shall neither be entitled to repeat the year nor to progress conditionally as normally permitted under the Principal Regulations. Course duration. 5. The course shall extend over a period of three years of fulltime study or the equivalent in part-time study. Course programme. 6.

(1)Applicants shall be required to indicate their choice of area of study at the time of application for admission.

(2)The course shall consist of study-units to which 180 ECTS credits shall be assigned.

(3)The Board shall publish the programme of study for each area of study before the commencement of the course, following the approval of Senate. Subject to changes that the Board may, with the approval of Senate, be constrained to make, students are bound to follow the study-units and obtain the credits as indicated in the programme of study of the areas of study they are following for the Degree. Study-units passed by compensation. Substituted by: L.N. 218 of

Notwithstanding the provisions of regulation 50 of the Principal Regulations, in any year of the Course, students shall not be awarded more than 10 ECTS credits for study-units passed by compensation and if necessary the students shall be required to choose which study-unit/s of the eligible study-units are to be considered as passed by compensation, to a maximum value of 10 ECTS credits. Diploma in Information Technology. Subsituted by L.N. 13 of
4. Students who successfully complete study-units to which 60 ECTS credits are assigned and opt not to proceed with the Course or, having proceeded, do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the Diploma. Higher Diploma in Information Technology. Subsituted by L.N. 13 of
6. Students who successfully complete study-units to which 120 ECTS credits are assigned and opt not to proceed with the Course or, having proceeded, do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the Higher Diploma. Classification of the Award. Subsituted by: L.N. 13 of

(1)The Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in each year of the Course, which shall be weighted as follows: First Year Average Mark 20% Second Year Average Mark 40% Third Year Average Mark 40%

(2)The Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Diploma and Higher Diploma shall be based on the results DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (HONOURS) - B.SC.
