(2)In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - Substituted by: L.N. 14 of

1. "the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Arts; "the Course" means the programme of study leading to the Degree of Master in Translation and Terminology Studies - M. Trans. - or the Degree of Master in Interpreting Studies - M. Interp.; "the Degree" means the Degree of Master in Translation and Terminology Studies - M. Trans. - or the Degree of Master in Interpreting Studies - M. Interp.; "the Postgraduate Certificate" means the Postgraduate Certificate in Translation and Terminology Studies - P.G.Cert. Trans. - or the Postgraduate Certificate in Interpreting Studies - P.G.Cert. Interp.; "the Postgraduate Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Terminology Studies - P.G.Dip. 9. DEGREE OF MASTER IN TRANSLATION AND TERMINOLOGY STUDIES OR DEGREE OF MASTER IN INTERPRETING STUDIES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF ARTS 3.

(1)The Course shall be open to applicants who shall satisfy the following requirements: (

1. a)be in possession of any first cycle degree from this University or another higher education institution recognized by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class Honours or Category II or equivalent; (
2. b)have a good spoken and written command of the English language (IELTS 6.5 level or higher); and (
3. c)have a high level of proficiency in one’s own native language (at C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

(2)Applicants in possession of the Postgraduate Diploma in Translation and Interpreting may be allowed to join Part II of the Course, provided that such applicants shall choose either "Translation" or "Interpreting" as their research area of study.

(3)The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed t o register i n each C ourse, depending on the availability of resources. The number of available places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.

(4)If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, applicants shall be selected using the following criteria, weighted as follows: (

1. a)language, thematic and translation skills test - 70%; (
2. b)performance during the interview - 30%.

(5)The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.

(6)The interviewing board may make use of electronic means of communication in order to carry out interviews with applicants.

(7)For the purpose of selection, applicants who fully satisfy all the requirements for admission by 31st August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first and those for whom places are available will be accepted and informed accordingly. If vacant places are still available, applicants who obtain all necessary qualifications after the 31st August and before the 30th September shall be considered to take up the remaining places. Course duration. 4. The course shall extend over three semesters of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study. Programme of study. 5.

(1)namely: The programme of study shall consist of two parts, (

1. a)Part One which shall comprise a number of taught study-units to which 60 credits are assigned; and (
2. b)Part Two consisting of research work and the writing of a dissertation to which 30 credits are assigned.

(2)The list of languages offered in the programme of study shall be published prior to the commencement of each course. DEGREE OF MASTER IN TRANSLATION AND TERMINOLOGY STUDIES OR DEGREE OF MASTER IN INTERPRETING STUDIES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF ARTS [ S.L.327.306 6.

(1)The assessment of each taught study-unit shall be completed by the end of the semester in which the teaching of this study-unit is held. 3 Assessment and progress

(2)Students who in any academic year fail in the assessment of not more than 20 credits, if following the full-time course, or not more than 10 credits if following the part-time course, shall be given the opportunity to re-sit the failed assessment during the September supplementary examination session.

(3)Students who fail more than the number of credits permitted under paragraph

(2), or students who after re-assessment fail to obtain credit for any study-unit, shall be required to withdraw from the course. 7.

(1)Students who successfully complete the 60 taught credits included in Part One of the Course with an average mark of at least 50%, but who opt not to proceed to Part Two of the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in the relevant area of study.

(2)Students who obtain at least 30 credits assigned to taught studyunits with an average mark of at least 50% and do not proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in the relevant area of study. 8.

(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of approximately 25,000 words in accordance with the guidelines regarding format issued by the Board. The Board may prescribe a different length if the nature of research so requires. The dissertation must also satisfy the Board as regards content, language and presentation.

(2)Work on the dissertation shall be undertaken during the third semester of the course. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study.

(3)A provisional title of the dissertation and a detailed research proposal shall be submitted to the Board for approval by the beginning of the second semester.

(4)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor, who shall submit to the Board a progress report regarding the students under supervision not later than 3 weeks before the date of when submission is due. The report may include recommendations to either (

1. a)extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation; or (
2. b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
3. i)the extension of the study period referred to in (
4. a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of Principal Regulations; and (
5. ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
6. b)until it has first given the student a chance to be heard. Postgraduate Diploma. Amended by: L.N. 14 of 2018. Substituted by: L.N. 44 of 2022. Dissertation. 4 [ S.L.327.306 Classification of the Awards. Special provisions for part-time courses. DEGREE OF MASTER IN TRANSLATION AND TERMINOLOGY STUDIES OR DEGREE OF MASTER IN INTERPRETING STUDIES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF ARTS 9. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Postgraduate Diploma and the Degree shall be b a s e d on t h e r e s ul t s o b t a i n ed i n a ll t h e co m p o n e n t s o f th e programme of study, all credits being weighted equally. 10. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the course.
