- In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery; "the course" means the programme of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Pharmaceutical Science B.Sc. (Hons) in Pharm. Sc.; "the Degree" means the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Pharmaceutical Science - B.Sc. (Hons) in Pharm. Sc.); and "the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards. S.L. 327.236

(1)To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall, apart from satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admission Regulations of the University, be in possession of the special course requirements listed hereunder: Special course requirements for admission. Amended by: L.N. 254 of 2018; L.N. 115 of 2025. (a) a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Chemistry; and (b) a pass in Pure Mathematics at Intermediate or Advanced Matriculation Level.
(2)During the first year of the Course, accepted applicants are also required to undergo an occupational health assessment, as detailed in the Occupational Health Protocol approved by the Board, so as to ascertain that they are fit for the duties related to their proposed studies. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. For the course commencing in October 2011: (
- a)a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Chemistry; and (
- b)one pass at Advanced Matriculation Level and one pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level, in both cases at Grade C or better, in two subjects chosen from Applied or Pure Mathematics, Biology, Computing, English, Philosophy, Physics. For courses commencing in October 2012 or later: (
- a)a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Chemistry; (
- b)a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in one of the following subjects: Biology, Computing, English, Philosophy, Physics; and (
- c)a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level at Grade C or better in Pure Mathematics. Course duration. 4. The course shall extend over a period of four years of fulltime study. Programme of study. 5. The programme of study shall comprise study-units to which 240 credits are assigned and shall include: (
- a)theoretical and practical training in the following subjects: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Plant and animal biology; Physics; General and inorganic chemistry; Organic chemistry; Analytical chemistry; Medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry, including analysis of medicinal products; General and applied biochemistry; Anatomy, histology and physiology, medical terminology; Microbiology; Pharmacy Practice; Pharmacology and pharmacotherapy; Pharmaceutical technology, Pharmaceutics; Toxicology; Pharmacognosy; Pharmacovigilance; Legislation and professional ethics; and (
- b)a project on an aspect of practical pharmacy approved by the Board. DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE - B.Sc. (Hons) in Pharm. The Board shall publish the programme of study before the commencement of the course, following the approval of Senate. Publication of programme of study. 7. Students who successfully complete Year 3 and obtain 180 credits but who either opt not to proceed with the course leading to the Degree, or having proceeded, do not successfully complete the course, shall be eligible for the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Pharmaceutical Science) - B.Sc. (Pharm. Sc). Degree of Bachelor of Science (Pharmaceutical Science) - B.Sc. (Pharm. Sc). 8.
(1)The Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in each year of the course, which shall be weighted as follows: Classification of the Awards. First Year Average Mark 10% Second Year Average Mark 10% Third Year Average Mark 30% Fourth Year Average Mark 50%.
(2)The Final Weighted Average Mark for the classification of the Bachelor of Science (Pharmaceutical Science) - B.Sc. (Pharm. Sc.) - shall be based on the results obtained in the first three years of the course, which shall be weighted as follows: First Year Average Mark 20% Second Year Average Mark 20% Third Year Average Mark 60%.
