- In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Education; "the course" means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management M.A.; "the Degree" means the Degree of Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management - M.A.; "the Postgraduate Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership and Management - P.G. Dip.; and "the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards. S.L. 327.328

(1)Applicants may be registered as students on the course if they are in possession of: Requirements for admission. Amended by: L.N. 323 of 2015. (
- a)a degree in Education with at least Third Class Honours from the University of Malta or a degree from another university recognized as equivalent for the purpose, together with a minimum of five years’ teaching experience; or (
- b)any other degree with at least Third Class Honours or Category III from the University of Malta or a degree from another university recognized as equivalent for the purpose together with a recognized teaching or education qualification and a minimum of five years’ teaching experience; or (
- c)a Master’s degree that qualified applicants for a Teacher’s Warrant, together with a minimum of five year’s teaching experience; or 2 DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT - M.A. - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION [ S.L.327.416 (
- d)any other recognised teaching qualification together with at least five years’ teaching experience.
(2)Applicants in possession of the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership may be allowed to join Part Two of the course, if they have completed successfully this Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum average mark of 65%.
(3)The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed to register on the course, depending on the availability of resources. The number of available places shall be announced at the time of the call for applications.
(4)If the number of applicants exceeds the number of available places, applicants shall be invited for an interview. The criteria for the selection process are: (a) qualifications as identified in paragraph
(1)of this bye-law: 20%; (
- b)professional aptitude and disposition: 20%; (
- c)performance during the interview: 20%; and (
- d)professional development profile: 40%.

- The course shall extend over three semesters of full-time studies or the equivalent in part-time studies. Programme of study. Substituted by: L.N. 323 of 2015; L.N. 79 of

(1)namely: The programme of study shall consist of two parts, (
- a)Part One which shall comprise a number of taught study-units to which 60 ECTS credits are assigned; and (
- b)Part Two consisting of research work and the writing of a dissertation to which 30 ECTS credits are assigned, provided that subject to approval by the Board, students may be allowed to replace the dissertation by a project related to professional practice.
(2)Students who obtain the 60 ECTS credits assigned to the taught study-units with an average mark of at least 50% and do not proceed with the Course or having proceeded, do not successfully complete Part Two of the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.
(3)In cases where students lack essential knowledge in the area of research methodology, the Board may require students admitted to the course to follow and pass supplementary study-unit/ s in the said area to which a maximum of 12 ECTS credits are assigned in addition to the programme specified in paragraph
(1)of this bye-law. DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT - M.A. - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION [ S.L.327.416 3 6. The programme of study shall be published after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the course. Publication of programme of study. 7.
(1)The assessment of each taught study-unit shall be completed by the end of the semester in which the teaching of the study-unit is held. Assessment and progress. Amended by: L.N. 323 of 2015; L.N. 79 of 2018; L.N. 144 of 2022.
(2)Students who in any academic year fail in the assessment o f not more than 20 credits, if following the full-time course, or not more than 10 credits if following the part-time course, shall be given the opportunity to re-sit the failed assessments during the September supplementary examination session.
(3)Students who fail in more than the number of credits permitted under paragraph
(2)of this bye-law, or students who after re-assessment fail to obtain credit for any study-unit, shall be deemed to have failed the course.
(4)Repealed by Legal Notice 144 of 2022. 8.
(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of approximately 25,000 words, or a project related to professional practice, in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Board. Dissertation. Added by: L.N. 323 of 2015. Substituted by: L.N. 79 of 2018.
(2)Work on the dissertation or project shall commence during the third semester of the Course. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study.
(3)A provisional title for the dissertation or the theme of the project and a research proposal shall be submitted to the Board for approval by the end of the second semester.” 9.
(1)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor.
(2)Supervisors shall submit to the Board progress reports for each student under their supervision at the end of each semester. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (
- a)extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation or project; or (
- b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
- i)Supervisor. Added by: L.N. 323 of 2015. Amended by: L.N. 79 of 2018. the extension of the study period referred to in (
- a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and (
- ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
- b)until it has first given the student a chance to defend his case. 10. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Postgraduate Diploma and of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in all the components of the programme of study, all credits being weighted equally. DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT - M.A. - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF EDUCATION 11. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the course.
