DEGREE OF MASTER OF PHARMACY - M.PHARM UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY [ S.L.327.419 1 SUBSIDIARY LEGISLATION 327.419 BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF PHARMACY - M.PHARM. - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY 24th January, 2012 LEGAL NOTICE 27 of 2012, as amended by Legal Notices 290 of 2012, 211 of 2013 and 302 of 2016. 1.
(1)The title of these bye-laws is the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Pharmacy - M.Pharm. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery.
(2)Citation and interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery; "the course" means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Pharmacy - M.Pharm.; "t h e D eg r ee " m ea n s t h e d e g r e e o f M a s t e r o f P h a r m a c y M.Pharm.; and "the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards. (1)The course shall be open to applicants in possession of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Pharmaceutical Science comprising 240 ECTS credits, obtained with at least Second Class Honours. (2)Applicants in possession of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Pharmaceutical Science) obtained with Third Class Honours shall be eligible to apply if they submit a portfolio covering three years’ practice in an area related to pharmacy.
(3)Applicants in possession of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours after successfully completing a five-year programme of study shall be eligible to apply for a 30-credit programme of study.
(4)Applicants in possession of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) degree obtained with Third Class Honours or Pass after successfully completing a five-year programme of study shall be eligible to apply for a 30-credit programme of study if they submit a portfolio covering at least three year’s practice in an area related to pharmacy. 2 [ S.L.327.419 Course duration. Amended by: L.N. 290 of 2012. DEGREE OF MASTER OF PHARMACY - M.PHARM UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY 4.
(1)The course shall extend over three semesters of fulltime study.
(2)The programme of study for graduates of the 5-year course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) that commenced between 1995 and 2006 shall extend over one semester of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study. Programme of study. Amended by: L.N. 290 of 2012; L.N. 211 of 2013. 5.
(1)The programme of study shall comprise study-units to which a total of 90 credits are assigned, of which 60 credits are assigned to taught and practical study-units and 30 credits are assigned to the dissertation study-unit.
(2)The programme of study shall be published after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the course and shall include: (
- a)theoretical and practical training in the following subjects: Pharmacy Practice Clinical Pharmacy Community Health Care Legislation and Professional Ethics; (
- b)at least six months of in-service training in a pharmacy open to the public or in a hospital under the supervision of the pharmaceutical department of that hospital; and (
- c)a dissertation study-unit.
(3)The programme of study referred to in bye-law 3

(4)shall comprise study-units to which a total of 30 credits are assigned and shall consist of the following study-units: Patient Care Management Pharmaceutical Regulatory Affairs Research Paper. Assessment and progress. 6. The assessment of the taught study-units shall be held by the end of the semester in which the teaching of the study-units is held. Dissertation. 7.
(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of approximately 25,000 words. The title of the dissertation and a detailed research proposal shall be submitted at the time of application.
(2)Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a continuous basis during the period of study. Supervisors. 8.
(1)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor.
(2)Supervisors shall submit to the Board progress reports for each student under their supervision at the end of each semester of DEGREE OF MASTER OF PHARMACY - M.PHARM UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY [ S.L.327.419 3 study. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (
- a)extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation; or (
- b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
- i)the extension of the study period referred to in (
- a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and (
- ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
- b)until it has first given the student a chance to be heard. 9.
(1)The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in all the components of the programme of study, all credits being weighted equally.
(2)The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Degree for students who follow the 30-credit programme of study shall take into account the results obtained in the study-units of the fifth year of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) course as well as the results obtained in the 30-credit programme of study.
