(1)The title of these bye-laws is the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sport and Physical Activity - B. Sc. (Hons.) SPA - under the auspices of the Institute for Physical Education and Sport.

In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the institute for Physical Education and Sport; "the Certificate" means the Certificate in Sport and Physical Activity - Cert. SPA; "the course" means the programme of study leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sport and Physical Activity B. Sc. (Hons.) SPA; "the Degree" means the Degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sport and Physical Activity B. Sc. (Hons.) SPA; "the Diploma" means the Diploma in Sport and Physical Activity - Dip. SPA; and "the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards. S.L. 327.236

(1)To be registered as regular students in the course, applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admissions Regulations of the University. Requirements for admission. Amended by: L.N. 327 of 2016. L.N.172 of 2017; L.N. 270 of 2020. applicable for

(2)Applicants admitted under regulation 2

(2)(a)(iii) of the Admission Regulations must be in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Board that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the course with profit. The eligibility of such applicants shall be decided by the Board, following an interview conducted by an interviewing board appointed for the purpose. The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three persons.

(3)Applicants admitted in terms of paragraph

(2)of this bye- 2 DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - B.Sc.. (HONS.)SPA - UNDER THE AUSPICES [ S.L.327.450 OF THE INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT law shall be in possession of a pass in an English language proficiency test as approved by the University before being admitted to the course, provided that applicants in possession of a Secondary Education Certificate pass at Grade 3 or higher in English or a pass at the same standard in a comparable qualification, shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test.

(4)Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Sport and Leisure Studies may also be admitted to the course. Subject to the provisions of the Principal Regulations, such applicants may be allowed by the Board to transfer the credits obtained in the Diploma to the course. The number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 90 credits ECTs.

(5)All applicants shall: (

1. a)submit a medical fitness certificate, as per prescribed form provided by the Institute of Physical Education and Sport, dated not earlier than two months prior to the submission of the application; (
2. b)submit a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued by the Commissioner of Police; and (
3. c)submit documented evidence pertaining to any relevant experience listed on the appropriate form provided by the Institute of Physical Education and Sport.. Added by: L.N.172 of 2017. 4.

(1)The Board may recommend to Senate the number of students that shall be allowed to register for the full-time Course, depending on the availability of resources. The Board shall announce the number of available places at the time of the call for applications.

(2)When the number of applicants that may be admitted to the full-time Course is limited in terms of paragraph

(1)of this byelaw, and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, the Board shall make an initial ranking according to the following criteria, the weighting of which shall be published at the time of the call for applications: (a) academic qualifications; and (b) experience in the field of Physical Education and Sport.

(3)Candidates who fall within the limited number plus the next 25% (of the limited number of students) shall be called in for an interview. The final ranking shall be made on the totalling of the scores acquired in the initial ranking plus the mark acquired for the interview.

(4)The interviewing board appointed by the Board for the purpose, shall be composed of at least 3 members.

(5)For the purpose of selection, applicants whose qualifications were obtained by 31 August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first. If vacant places are still available, applicants who obtain all necessary qualifications after the 31 August and before the 30 September DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - B.Sc.. (HONS.)SPA - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT [ S.L.327.450 3 shall be considered to take up the remaining places. 5. The Course shall extend over a period of three years of fulltime study or the equivalent in part-time study. Course Duration. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. Substituted by: L.N. 276 of 2024. 6. The Board shall publish the course plan at the commencement of each course. Subject to changes that the Board may, with the approval of Senate, be constrained to make, students are bound to follow the study-units and obtain the credits as indicated in the course plan they are following for the Degree, provided that the course plan is drawn up in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Principal Regulations. Programme of study. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. 7. Students shall be required to register and obtain credit for study-units to which a total of 180 ECTs credits are assigned. Registration. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. 8. Students who successfully complete study-units to which at least 30 ECTs credits have been assigned, and opt not to proceed with the course or, having proceeded, do not successfully complete the course, shall be entitled to the Certificate. Certificate. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. 9. Students who successfully complete study-units to which at least 60 ECTs credits have been assigned, and opt not to proceed with the course or, having proceeded, do not successfully complete the course, shall be entitled to the Diploma. Diploma. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. 10. For the purpose of the classification of the Diploma and the Degree, the overall evaluation of each student’s performance in the course shall be based on the results obtained in all the study-units with all credits awarded being weighted equally. Classification of the Awards. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. 11. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the course. Provisions for Courses offered on Part-Time Basis. Renumbered by: L.N.172 of 2017. Amended by: L.N. 276 of 2024. 12. The Course may be offered on a flexible part-time basis with the following special provisions in terms of the provisions outlined in the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 applicable with the necessary changes needed (mutatis mutandis) owing to the part-time nature of the Course: Added by: L.N. 276 of 2024. 1. a)During each academic year, students shall be allowed to register for a number of study-units as agreed with the Course Coordinator, to which not less than 12 ECTS credits are assigned, provided that registration for the study-units included in the programme of study for each Course year (60 ECTS credits) is spread over not more than three academic years; (
2. b)In order to progress regularly from one Course year to the next, the 60 ECTS credits of each Course year must be completed in not more than three academic years; (
3. c)Students who are absent for the assessment of a study- 4 DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - B.Sc.. (HONS.)SPA - UNDER THE AUSPICES [ S.L.327.450 OF THE INSTITUTE FOR PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND SPORT unit, or fail in the assessment of a study-unit, shall, if eligible, be required to take the assessment of any number of such incomplete study-units at the September assessment session or at the next available opportunity; (
4. d)If necessary, students may be allowed to refer the assessment of study-units to the next academic year, provided that not more than 12 ECTS credits may be referred from one Course year to the next; (
5. e)The assessment of study-units that may be referred to the next academic year shall be considered as additional to the minimum number of credits (12 ECTS credits) that students are obliged to register for during any academic year; (
6. f)Students who, after having registered for all the studyunits comprising the programme of a Course year, and after the September session lack more than 12 ECTS credits to complete the programme for the Course year, may be allowed, if eligible and after academic advice, to refer them to the next academic year during which they shall not be allowed to register for any other study-units. If such an academic year is needed in addition to the maximum period of three years referred to in (
7. b)of this bye-law, it shall be considered as an additional year; (
8. g)Students who, after having registered for all the studyunits comprising the programme of the final Course year, may, if necessary and if eligible, refer any incomplete study-units to an additional academic year; (
9. h)An additional year, whether required in terms of paragraphs (
10. f)or (
11. g)of this bye-law may be granted once only throughout the Course, unless in special circumstances and with the approval of Senate; (
12. i)Students registered on the flexible part-time programme must obtain the approval of the Course Coordinator before they are registered on the studyunits they wish to follow in any academic year; (
13. j)Subject to approval by the Board, students registered on the Course may be allowed to change the mode of attendance from full-time to flexible part-time or vice versa at the beginning of the second year of the regular programme of study. Changes in mode of attendance in any subsequent year of the Course may be considered by the Board, if the Course programme permits; and (
14. k)Notwithstanding the provisions in the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 owing to the nature of the Course when offered on a flexible part-time basis that allows for a longer duration than normal, students registered on such a flexible part-time Course programme shall not be DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY - B.Sc..
