L.S. 327.457 Ordinamenti għall-Grad ta’ Master of Science in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces taħt il-patroċinju tal-Fakultà tal-Ambj

(1)The title of these bye-laws is the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Master of Science in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.

(2)Citation and interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the Faculty for the Built Environment; "the course" means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces; "the Degree" means the degree of Master of Science in Conservation of Decorative Architectural Surfaces; "the Postgraduate Diploma" means the Postgraduate Diploma in Heritage Studies; and "the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards. S.L. 327.328 2. These bye-laws shall be commencing in October 2012 or later. Applicability. 3. applicable for courses The course shall be open to applicants in possession of: (

1. a)a Bachelor’s degree in Conservation and Restoration Studies from the University of Malta obtained with at least Second Class (Honours); or (
2. b)a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Malta obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in a discipline related to Archaeology, Architecture, Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, History of Art or Physics; or (
3. c)qualifications deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, to be comparable to the qualifications listed in paragraph (
4. a)or (
5. b)of this byelaw. The admission of applicants under this paragraph may be made conditional on the results of an assessment as the Board may deem appropriate. Requirements for admission. 2 [ S.L.327.457 DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CONSERVATION OF DECORATIVE ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT Preparatory programme. 4. Applicants registering under paragraph (
6. b)and, if necessary, (
7. c)of bye-law 3 shall be required to successfully complete a preparatory programme comprising 60 ECTS credits, with an overall average mark of 55% or better, prior to their registration as regular students on the course. Course duration. 5. The course shall extend over four semesters of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study, including two stages to be undertaken during the two summer periods. Programme of study. 6.

(1)The programme of study shall comprise study-units to which a total of 120 ECTS credits are assigned, of which 80 ECTS credits are assigned to taught and practical study-units, 10 ECTS credits are assigned to two summer stages and 30 ECTS credits are assigned to the dissertation study-unit.

(2)Students who obtain a minimum of 60 ECTS credits assigned to taught and practical study-units with an average mark of at least 50% and do not proceed with the course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the course, shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.

(3)The programme of study shall be published after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the course.

(4)All students shall be required to undertake two compulsory summer stages abroad at an institution approved by the Board, as indicated in the programme of study. Assessment and progress. 7.

(1)The assessment of the taught and practical study-units shall be completed by the end of the semester in which the teaching of the study-unit is held.

(2)Students who in any academic year fail in the assessment of not more than 10 ECTS credits for taught study-units, if following the full-time course, or not more than 5 ECTS credits for taught study-units if following the part-time course, shall be given the opportunity to re-sit the failed assessments during the September supplementary examination session.

(3)Students who fail in more than the number of credits permitted under paragraph

(2)of this bye-law, or students who after re-assessment fail to obtain credit for any study-unit, shall be required to withdraw from the course.

(4)Students who in any academic year fail in the assessment of the practical study-units shall not have the right to a supplementary assessment and shall be required to withdraw from the course.

(5)The study-units involving a summer stage shall be assessed on a Pass/Fail basis. Students who do not complete or fail in the assessment of any of the summer stages shall not have the right to a supplementary assessment and shall be required to withdraw from the course. Dissertation studyunit. 8. Students shall be allowed to proceed to the dissertation study-unit subject to obtaining the 80 ECTS credits assigned to the DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN CONSERVATION OF DECORATIVE ARCHITECTURAL SURFACES UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT [ S.L.327.457 3 taught and practical study-units, with a minimum average mark of 65%. 9.

(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of up to 25,000 words in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Board. Dissertation.

(2)Work on the dissertation shall be undertaken during the fourth semester of the course. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study.

(3)A provisional title of the dissertation and a detailed research proposal shall be submitted to the Board for approval by the beginning of the third semester of the course. 10.

(1)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor, not less than once a month. Supervisor.

(2)Supervisors shall submit to the Board progress reports for each student under their supervision at the end of each semester of studies, whether the student is following the course on a full-time or a part-time basis. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (

1. a)extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation; or (
2. b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
3. i)the extension of the study period referred to in (
4. a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and (
5. ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
6. b)until it has first given the student a chance to be heard. 11. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Postgraduate Diploma and of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in all the graded components of the programme of study, all graded credits being weighted equally. Classification of the Awards. 12.

(1)The Board may, from time to time, offer students the opportunity to follow the course on a part-time basis. Special provisions for part-time courses.

(2)The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the course.
