(1)The title of these regulations is the Selection of Applicants for Admission to the Master of Dental Surgery - M.D.S. - Degree Course Regulations. Citation and interpretation.
(2)In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires "the course" means the course leading to the degree of Master of Dental Surgery - M.D.S.

(1)If there are more eligible applicants of Maltese and other EU/EEA states nationality than there are places available, applicants from this group shall be selected by the University Admissions Board, after seeking the advice of the Admissions Committee of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, in accordance with the criteria for selection as specified in regulation 6. (2)If there are more eligible applicants of non-EU/EEA nationality than there are places available, applicants from this group shall be selected as indicated in paragraph
(5)of regulation 6.
(3)If there are more eligible applicants of holders of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Dental Hygiene or Dental Technology than there are places available, applicants from this group shall be selected as indicated in regulation

  3. SELECTION OF APPLICANTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY M.D.S. - DEGREE COURSE 6.
(1)The Faculty Admissions Committee shall first consider eligible applicants whose qualifications were obtained in the Matriculation Examination, or from another examining board if the Faculty Admissions Committee is satisfied that the qualifications presented are comparable in content and equivalent in standard to the Matriculation Examination in the same subject. For the purpose of selection, applicants whose qualifications were obtained by 31 August preceding the commencement of the course shall be considered first and provided that the grades are obtained together in one session (i.e. one sitting) of the examinations and are from one recognised examining board. These applicants shall be placed in categories following the criteria listed hereunder: (
  1. a)grades obtained in the following subjects at the level indicated shall be considered first: (
  2. i)Chemistry at Advanced Level and Biology at Advanced Level, hereafter referred to as the primary subjects; and (
  3. ii)Physics, at either Advanced or Intermediate Level, hereafter referred to as the secondary subject; (
  4. b)a grade obtained in the secondary subject taken at Advanced Level, shall, for the purpose of selection, be given the same value as the same grade obtained in the secondary subject at Intermediate Level; (
  5. c)applicants in possession of the General Entry Requirements may offer passes in the primary subjects and/or in the secondary subject, either as part of the General Entry Requirements or in addition to the General Entry Requirements; (
  6. d)for the purpose of selection, a pass obtained in a session of examinations which is held after the results of a previous session were published, shall be deemed to be a pass obtained in a session that is distinct from the previous one. This regulation shall also apply to the second session of the Matriculation Examination offered by the MATSEC Board of the University of Malta according to the provisions of the Matriculation Certificate Examination Regulations and this notwithstanding any other regulation governing the award of the Matriculation Certificate; (

(2)The Faculty Admissions Committee shall call for an interview and/or examination from those applicants placed in the upper categories, not less than the total number of students established by Senate, provided that if one applicant in a category is called for an interview, all applicants falling in the same category shall be called. The Interviewing Board/s shall be composed of the Dean or his delegate, three other members appointed by the Board, one of whom shall be from outside the Faculty of Dental Surgery.
(3)The Faculty Admissions Committee shall reserve the right to hold a second interview if two or more applicants place in the same position during the first interview.
(4)The Faculty Admissions Committee shall place the applicants in a final order of merit after considering their aptitude, motivation, communication skills and overall academic background. The Committee shall submit a detailed report including its final recommendation regarding selection of eligible applicants to the University Admissions Board. The Faculty Admissions Committee may be assisted by any experts it deems necessary when conducting the selection interviews.
(5)The three places reserved for non-EU/EEA applicants in terms of regulation 4 of these regulations shall be filled on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee, which shall first consider applicants who successfully complete the course leading to the Certificate in Foundation Studies (Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Allied Health Sciences).

  1. a)If there are more eligible applicants from the Foundation Studies Programme by the end of the June examination session than there are places available, applicants from this group shall be chosen based on their academic ranking within this Programme, and on an interview (including a manual dexterity test) which shall be held in July. (
  2. b)If there are less eligible applicants from the Foundation Studies Programme by the end of the June examination session, other eligible applicants from non-EU/EEA countries shall be considered and selection shall be based on their academic ranking and on an interview (including a manual dexterity test) which shall be held in July or later. (
  3. c)Applicants successful in terms of sub-paragraphs (
  4. a)and (
  5. b)of this regulation shall be classified in order of merit so that the vacant places can be filled. Successful SELECTION OF APPLICANTS FOR ADMISSION TO THE MASTER OF DENTAL SURGERY M.D.S. - DEGREE COURSE [ S.L.327.486 5 applicants shall be expected to comply with the Occupational Health Protocol. 7. The places reserved for holders of the degree of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Dental Hygiene or Dental Technology as specified in the call for applications, shall be filled on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee.
