(1)The title of these bye-laws is the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) - LL.B. (Hons), the Degree of Bachelor of Laws - LL.B., and the Diploma of Legal Procurator Dip. L.P. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Laws. Citation and interpretation. Amended by: L.N. 200 of 2018.
(2)In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Laws; “the Course” means the programme of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) - LL.B. (Hons), or to the degree of Bachelor of Laws - LL.B., - or to the Diploma of Legal Procurator - Dip. L.P. - as the case may be; “the Honours Degree” means the degree of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) - LL.B. (Hons); “the Degree” means the degree of Bachelor of Laws - LL.B.; “the Diploma” means the Diploma of Legal Procurator – Dip. L.P. and, only for the purpose of bye-law 5
(3), means the Diploma in Law; “the Higher Diploma” means the Higher Diploma in Law; and “the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2004. 2. These bye-laws shall be applicable as from October 2018 onwards. 3.
(1)Apart from satisfying the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admissions Regulations of the University of Malta, applicants for the Honours Degree, the Degree, and the Diploma shall also be in possession of the following requirements: (
- a)two passes at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level or equivalent in English and Maltese, and three passes at Intermediate Matriculation Level or equivalent, one of which at Applicability. (Hons), THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF LAWS - LL.B. - AND THE DIPLOMA OF LEGAL PROCURATOR - Dip.L.P. grade C or better, in subjects chosen as follows: one subject from Group 2, one subject from Group 3, and any another subject (except English and Maltese); or (
- b)for entry in October 2020 or later, a degree at MQF level 6 in any area of study awarded by the University of Malta or any other higher education institution recognised by Senate, and a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level in Maltese: provided that if the degree is in Maltese a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level or equivalent in English is also required.
(2)For entry in October 2020 or later, applicants considered as “Adult Learners” (mature applicants) in terms of paragraph (c) of regulation 6 of the Admissions Regulations, apart from being in possession of those qualifications and/or experience that would satisfy the Faculty Admissions Committee that they have reached the academic standard required to follow the Course with profit, shall also be in possession of a pass at Grade C or better at Advanced Matriculation Level in English and in Maltese or equivalent. Such applicants shall also be required to submit with their application a letter written in English giving their motivation for applying for the Course together with a copy of their Curriculum Vitae (C.V.). Duration of courses. 4.
(1)The Honours Degree course shall extend over a period of four years of full-time study.
(2)The Degree course shall extend over a period of three years of full-time study, which shall be the first three years of the Honours Degree.
(3)Unless followed concurrently with the programme for the Degree, the Diploma course shall extend over one year of full-time study. Programmes of study. Amended by: L.N. 200 of 2018. 5.
(1)The Honours Degree shall be awarded following the successful completion of study-units to which 240 ECTS credits are assigned as set out in the programme of study.
(2)Students who successfully complete the programme of study for the three year course and either opt not to proceed to the Honours Degree, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the course, shall be eligible for the award of the Degree.
(3)Students who obtain 60 credits assigned to taught studyunits with an average mark of at least 50% and do not proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Diploma in Law.
(4)Students who obtain 120 credits assigned to taught study-units with an average mark of at least 50% and do not proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Higher Diploma in Law.
(5)Students have the option of following the programme for the Diploma either concurrently with the course leading to the DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF LAWS (HONOURS) - LL.B. (Hons), THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF LAWS - LL.B. - AND THE DIPLOMA OF LEGAL PROCURATOR - Dip.L.P. [ S.L.327.507 Degree or following the award of the Degree or the Honours Degree with at least Category II or Second Class (Honours).
(6)Students who take up the option to follow the course leading to the Diploma concurrently with the course leading to the Degree shall indicate their option at the end of the first year of the course and prior to registering in the second year and shall only qualify for the Diploma if they also satisfy all the requirements for the Degree as set out in the programme of study.
(7)When followed concurrently with the programme of study leading to the Degree, the study-units for the Diploma shall be followed instead of, or together with, other Law study-units, as directed by the Board.
(8)The programme of study for the Diploma shall consist of study-units to which 60 ECTS credits are assigned, comprising also study-units dealing with both substantive and procedural law.
(9)Students shall not register for more than 60 ECTS credits per academic year for the Honours Degree course, the Degree course, and the Diploma course.
(10)The Board shall publish the programme of study for the Honours Degree course, the Degree course, and the Diploma course drawn up in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Principal Regulations, and approved by Senate.
(11)Subject to changes that the Board may, with the approval of Senate, make, students shall be bound to follow the study-units and obtain the credits as indicated in the programme of study they are following for the Honours Degree, the Degree, and the Diploma course. 6. The final weighted average mark for the classification of the Honours Degree, the Degree and the Diploma shall be based on the results obtained in all the components of the programme of study, all years being weighted equally.
