CERTIFICATE IN ENGINEERING SCIENCES [ S.L. 327.627 1 SUBSIDIARY LEGISLATION 327.627 CERTIFICATE IN ENGINEERING SCIENCES COURSE REGULATIONS 16th October, 2020 LEGAL NOTICE 396 of 2020, as amended by Legal Notices 169 of 2021, 182 of 2022 and 237 of 2023. 1.
(1)These regulations may be cited as the Certificate in Engineering Sciences Course Regulations. Citation and Interpretation
(2)In these regulations, unless the context otherwise requires“the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Engineering; “the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the Course, on the recommendation of the Board; “the Certificate” means the Certificate in Engineering Sciences; and “the Course” means the programme of study leading to the Certificate in Engineering Sciences. 2. These regulations shall be applicable for courses commencing in October 2021 or later or later, except for regulation 4 of these regulations which shall be applicable from 22nd February, 2021 onwards. (1)To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall: Requirements for Admission Amended by: L.N. 182 of 2022; L.N. 237 of 2023. either (
- a)have obtained a minimum of 36 points in examinations taken as part of the Matriculation Certificate and be in possession of passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics together with a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in one of the following subjects: Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computing, Information Technology, Engineering Drawing, Graphical Communication or other science/numeric subjects as approved by the Board; or (
- b)be in possession of a diploma in an engineering domain which the Board deems as appropriate, classified at MQF Level 4, as well as passes in the Secondary Education Certificate Examination at Grade 5 or better in English Language, Maltese and Mathematics.
(2)Applicants may be required to attend for an interview to 2 [ S.L. 327.627 CERTIFICATE IN ENGINEERING SCIENCES assess whether they have the necessary aptitude to follow the Course with profit.
(3)The interviewing board, which shall be appointed for the purpose by the Board, shall be composed of at least three members. Course Duration Amended by: L.N. 169 of 2021. 4.
(1)The Course shall extend over a period of two semesters of full-time study or four semesters of part-time study.
(2)The Board of Studies may allow students who do not qualify for the Certificate to repeat the Course once only. Board of Studies 5. The general administration of the Course shall be entrusted to a Board of Studies, approved by Senate. Programme of Study 6.
(1)The Course shall consist of a number of taught study-units to which a total of 60 ECTS credits are assigned.
(2)The programme of study shall be drawn up by the Board of Studies and published by the Board, after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the Course. Attendance and Assessment Amended by: L.N. 169 of 2021. 7.
(1)Unless otherwise specified in the description of a study-unit, attendance is obligatory for lectures, tutorials, seminars, practicals, and any other teaching session in whatever mode. On the basis of documented evidence, a lecturer may bar a student whose attendance in a study-unit is not satisfactory from being assessed in that study-unit.
(2)The assessment of each taught study-unit shall be completed by the end of the semester in which the teaching of the study-unit is held.
(3)Students who fail in a study-unit declared to be compensatable in the programme of study with a mark of not less than 35% shall be awarded the grade CP (Compensated Pass) if their Weighted Year Average Mark is at least 50%. Study-units passed by compensation shall not be re-assessed.
(4)Students may not be awarded more than 12 ECTS credits through compensated passes.
(5)Results for the assessment of study-units shall be published as a percentage mark and grade as indicated in the table below: Mark Range Grade 90% -100% A+ 80% -89% A CERTIFICATE IN ENGINEERING SCIENCES 75% -79% B+ 70% -74% B 60% -69% C+ 55% -59% C 50% -54% D+ 45% -49% D 0% -44% F. (1)The Certificate shall be awarded to students who obtain all the credits indicated in regulation 6. Award of the Certificate
(2)The names of students who qualify for the award of the Certificate shall be published in a list in alphabetical order.
- The provisions of the foregoing regulations shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board of Studies as necessary due to the part-time nature of the Course.
