[ S.L. 327.632 1 SUBSIDIARY LEGISLATION 327.632 BYE-LAWS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT - M.SC. - UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY OF ECONOMICS, MANAGEMENT AND ACCOUNTANCY 13th August, 2019 LEGAL NOTICE 202 of 2019, as amended by Legal Notice 252 of 2021 and 122 of 2025. 1.

(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the degree of Master of Science in Insurance and Risk Management M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.
(2)Citation and Interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy; “the Board of Studies” means the Board of Studies appointed by Senate for the Course, on the recommendation of the Board; “the Course” means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Insurance and Risk Management M.Sc.; “the Degree” means the degree of Master of Science in Insurance and Risk Management - M.Sc.; “the Postgraduate Certificate” means the Postgraduate Certificate in Insurance and Risk Management – P.G. Cert.; “the Postgraduate Diploma” means the Postgraduate Diploma in Insurance and Risk Management – P.G. Dip.; and “the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2008. 2. These bye-laws shall be commencing in October 2021 or later. applicable for courses Applicability. Amended by: L.N. 252 of 2021. 3.
(1)The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications: Requirements for Admission. Substituted by: L.N. 252 of 2021. Amended by: L.N. 122 of 2025. (
  1. a)the degree of Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) in Insurance and Risk Management obtained with at least Second Class Honours; or (
  2. b)the Advanced Diploma in Insurance awarded by the 2 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT - M.SC. [ S.L. 327.632 Chartered Institute of Insurance (UK.); or (
  3. c)the degree of Bachelor of Commerce with Insurance as one of the two main areas of study, obtained with at least Category II; or (
  4. d)a degree with at least Second Class Honours or Category II, in any other area deemed relevant by the Board of Studies, provided that applicants in possession of a degree with at least a Third Class Honours or Category III may also be considered. Applicants in possession of the degree with Third Class Honours or Category III shall be allowed to proceed to the research component subject to the attainment of an average mark of at least 55% in the taught component; or (
  5. e)a qualification deemed by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board of Studies, to be comparable to the qualifications listed in subparagraphs (a), (
  6. b)and (c).
(2)Applicants in possession of the Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Regulation and Compliance may be allowed to join the research component of the Course.
(3)Students admitted under sub-paragraphs (d) and (e) of paragraph
(1), and paragraph
(2)of this bye-law, may be required to follow and pass supplementary study-unit/s, as recommended by the Board of Studies, to which a maximum of 12 ECTS credits are assigned, in addition to the programme of study as specified in bye-law 5 of these bye-laws.
(4)The admission of applicants under sub-paragraph (
  1. d)and if necessary sub-paragraph (
  2. e)of paragraph
(1)of this bye-law, may be made conditional on the result of an interview conducted for the purpose.
(5)Interviews, if necessary, shall be conducted by a board composed of at least three members appointed for the purpose by the Board. Course Duration.
  1. The Course shall extend over three semesters of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study. Programme of Study.
  2. The programme of study shall comprise study-units to which a total of 90 ECTS credits are assigned, of which 60 ECTS credits are assigned to taught study-units and 30 ECTS credits are assigned to the dissertation study-unit.
  3. Students who successfully complete a prescribed set of MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT - M.SC. [ S.L. 327.632 taught study-units totalling 30 ECTS credits with an average mark of at least 50% and do not proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate.
  4. Students who obtain the 60 ECTS credits assigned to the taught study-units with an average mark of least 50% and do not proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the dissertation, shall be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma.
  5. Students shall be eligible for the award of the Degree if they obtain the 90 ECTS credits as outlined in the programme of study for the Course with an average mark of at least 50%.
  6. The programme of study shall be published after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the Course. 10.
(1)The assessment of each taught study-unit shall be completed by the end of the semester in which the teaching of the study-unit is held. Assessment and Progress.
(2)Students who in any academic year fail in the assessment of not more than 20 ECTS credits if following the full-time Course, or not more than 10 ECTS credits if following the part-time Course, shall be given the opportunity to re-sit the failed assessments during the September supplementary examination session.
(3)Students who fail in more than the number of credits permitted under paragraph
(2)of this bye-law, or students who after re-assessment fail to obtain credit for any study-unit, shall be required to withdraw from the Course. 11.
(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of approximately 15,000 to 20,000 words in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Board of Studies.
(2)Work on the dissertation shall be undertaken primarily during the third semester of the Course. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study.
(3)Students must submit a provisional title for the dissertation and a detailed research proposal to the Board for approval by the end of the first semester. 12.
(1)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor.
(2)Supervisors shall submit to the Board of Studies progress reports for each student under their supervision at the end of each Dissertation. 3 4 [ S.L. 327.632 MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT - M.SC. semester of study. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (
  1. a)extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation; or (
  2. b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
  3. i)the extension of the study period referred to in (
  4. a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and (
  5. ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
  6. b)above until it has first given the student a chance to be heard. Classification of Awards. 13. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Postgraduate Diploma and of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in all the relevant components of the programme of study, all credits being weighted equally. Special Provisions for Part-Time Courses. 14. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the Course.
