(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws in terms of the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 for the degree of Master of Arts in Baroque Studies M.A. - under the auspices of the International Institute for Baroque Studies.

(2)Citation and Interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires – "the Board" means the Board of the International Institute for Baroque Studies; "the Course" means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Baroque Studies - M.A.; "the Degree" means the degree of Master of Arts in Baroque Studies - M.A.; and "the Principal Regulations" means the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards,

3. Subject to the availability of resources, the Course shall be offered in areas of specialisation in which the Institute is in a position to offer expert guidance and supervision. The areas of specialisation shall be approved by Senate, on the recommendation of the Board, at the time of the call for applications. Areas of Specialisation. 4.

(1)To be registered as regular students in the course, applicants must be in possession of a Bachelor degree awarded by this University or any other higher education institution recognised by Senate, pegged at Level 6 on the MQF and obtained with at least Second Class Honours or Category II, in an area of study which the Board deems relevant to the proposed research study. Requirements for Admission.

(2)Subject to the conditions laid down in bye-law 4 of these bye-laws, the Board may also consider applicants in possession of a degree with Third Class Honours or Category III. 2 [ S.L. 327.682 MASTER OF ARTS IN BAROQUE STUDIES - M.A.

(3)The Admissions Board, on the recommendation of the Board, may also admit into the Course applicants not in possession of a first cycle degree, if it is satisfied that such applicants are in possession of other academic or professional qualifications and experience relevant to the proposed area of study, that together are deemed to be comparable to the level of a first degree. Such applicants shall be required to demonstrate the learning achieved through prior experience and qualifications through the evaluation procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning (RPL). Supplementary and Preparatory Programmes. 5.

(1)In cases where applicants lack essential knowledge in particular areas not covered in their first degree, the Board may require applicants registering in terms of paragraph

(1)of bye-law 4 of these bye-laws, to follow and pass supplementary study-units at Level 4 or lower, to which not more than 12 ECTS credits shall be assigned. These study-units shall be followed concurrently with the programme of study for the Course.

(3)of bye-law 4 of these bye-laws, shall be required to successfully complete a preparatory programme comprising not less than 30 ECTS credits and not more than 60 ECTS credits, with an overall average mark of 55% or better, prior to their registration as regular students on the Course. Course Duration.

1. The Course shall extend over three semesters of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study. Programme of Study.
2. The programme of study shall comprise study-units to which a total of 90 ECTS credits are assigned, of which 10 ECTS credits are assigned to taught study-units and 80 ECTS credits are assigned to the dissertation study-unit.
3. Students shall be eligible for the award of the Degree if they obtain the 90 ECTS credits as outlined in the programme of study for the Course with an average mark of at least 50%.
4. The programme of study shall be published after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the Course. Assessment and Progress. 10.

(1)The assessment of each taught study-unit shall be completed by the end of the semester in which the teaching of the study-unit is held.

(2)Students who fail in the assessment of the taught studyunits shall be given the opportunity to re-sit the failed assessments during the September assessment session. Students who after reassessment fail to obtain credit for any study-unit, shall be required to withdraw from the Course. MASTER OF ARTS IN BAROQUE STUDIES - M.A. [ S.L. 327.682 11.

(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of approximately 40,000 - 45,000 words (excluding footnotes/endnotes and appendices), in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Board. 3 Dissertation.

(2)A provisional title for the dissertation and a detailed research proposal shall be submitted to the Board for approval at the time of the call for applications.

(3)Work on the dissertation may be undertaken throughout the Course, following approval of the research proposal. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study. 12.

(1)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor.

(2)Supervisors shall submit to the Board progress reports for each student under their supervision at the end of each semester of studies, whether the student is following the course full-time or a part-time basis. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (

1. a)extend the period of study in order to enable the student to complete the dissertation; or (
2. b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
3. i)the extension of the study period referred to in (
4. a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and (
5. ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
6. b)until it has first given the student a chance to be heard. 13. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in all components of the programme of study, all credits being weighted equally. Classification of the Award. 14. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the Course. Special Provisions for Part-Time Courses.
