L.S. 327.705 Ordinamenti għall-grad ta’ Bachelor of Commerce – B.Com. – taħt il-patroċinju tal-Fakultà tal-Ekonomija, il-Management u l-Accountancy

(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the degree of Bachelor of Commerce - B.Com. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy.

(2)Citation and Interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy; “the Course” means the programme of study leading to the degree of Bachelor of Commerce - B.Com.; “the Degree” means the degree of Bachelor of Commerce B.Com.; “the Higher Diploma” means the Higher Diploma in Commerce - H.Dip.; and “the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019. 2. These bye-laws shall be commencing in October 2023 or later. applicable for courses 3.

(1)The Degree shall be offered in two main areas of study from the following: Accountancy; Banking, Finance and Investments; Economics; Insurance and Risk Management; Business and Enterprise Management; Marketing; Policy Studies; Tourism Management and any other area approved by Senate on the recommendation of the Board.

(2)The areas of study offered in any particular year and the permissible combinations of areas of study shall be published by the Board before the commencement of each Course, provided that in any year, combinations of areas of study shall be offered depending on the availability of resources and the number of applicants who choose them. BACHELOR OF COMMERCE - B.COM. 4.

(1)To be registered as regular students in the Course, applicants shall satisfy the general requirements for admission as specified in the Admissions Regulations, and be in possession of a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics, provided that applicants wishing to choose ‘Accountancy’ as one of the two main areas of study must also be in possession of a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in Accounting at the time of applying for the Course. Applicants who are not in possession of a pass at Advanced Matriculation Level in Accounting at the time of applying for the Course but are in possession of another qualification in Accounting that is deemed to be relevant by the Board, or of two Advanced Matriculation Level subjects at grade C or better, may also be considered.

(2)Applicants wishing to choose ‘Banking, Finance, and Investments’ as one of the two main areas of study may also be admitted into the Course if they are in possession of a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics together with one of the following qualifications which shall comprise not less than 120 ECTS credits and are offered at MQF Level 4 or higher: (i) the Certificate in Banking of the Chartered Institute of Bankers (comprising six subjects); or (ii) the Advanced Diploma in Financial Services offered by MCAST; or (iii) any other qualifications deemed relevant by the Board.

(3)Applicants wishing to choose ‘Insurance and Risk Management’ as one of the two main areas of study may also be admitted into the Course if they are in possession of a pass at Intermediate Matriculation Level in Pure Mathematics together with one of the following qualifications: (

1. i)the Certificate in Insurance of the Chartered Institute of Insurance; or (
2. ii)the Advanced Diploma in Insurance offered by MCAST; or (iii) the International Certificate in Enterprise Risk Management of the Institute of Risk Management; or (
3. iv)the Certificate in Risk Management in Financial Services of the Institute of Risk Management, provided that applicants wishing to choose ‘Banking, Finance, and Investments’ as the second main area of study may also BACHELOR OF COMMERCE - B.COM. [ S.L. 327.705 3 be admitted into the Course if they satisfy the requirements in paragraph

(2)of this bye-law.

(4)Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Commerce awarded by the University of Malta may be allowed by the Board to transfer these credits to the second year of the Course, provided that such applicants shall only be allowed to choose ‘Economics’ and ‘Business and Enterprise Management’ as the two main areas of study. The number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 60 ECTS credits.

1. The Course for the Degree shall extend over a period of three years of full-time study or five years of part-time study. Course Duration.
2. The programme of study for the Course shall consist of study-units to which 180 ECTS credits are assigned. Programme of Study. 7.

(1)Students shall be required to choose two main areas of study from those specified in paragraph

(1)of bye-law 3 as indicated in the programme of study for the Course.

(2)Subject to changes that the Board may, with the approval of Senate, be constrained to make, students are bound to follow the study-units and obtain the credits as indicated in the Course programme and in the programme of study of the areas of study they are following for the Degree, provided that Course programmes and programmes of study shall be drawn up in accordance with the relevant provisions of the Principal Regulations. 8.

(1)Students who successfully complete study-units to which 90 ECTS credits are assigned, and who either opt not to proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course shall be entitled to the award of the Higher Diploma.

(2)Students admitted in terms of paragraph

(4)of bye-law 4, who complete at least 30 ECTS credits in addition to the 60 ECTS credits transferred from the Diploma in Commerce, and opt not to proceed with the Course, or having proceeded do not successfully complete the Course, shall be eligible for the award of the Higher Diploma.

1. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Degree and the Higher Diploma shall be based on the results obtained during the Course, all credits being weighted equally. Classification of the Awards.
2. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the Course. 3. The Bye-Laws of 2019 in terms of the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 for the degrees of Bachelor of Commerce - B.Com. - and Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) - B.Com. (Hons) - under the auspices of the Faculty of Economics, Management and Accountancy, published as Legal Notice 290 of 2019, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from the 1st October 2023, provided that students registered for these courses before the 1st October 2023 shall continue to be governed by the bye-laws that were in force at the time of their joining the course.
