L.S. 327.707 Ordinamenti għall-grad ta’ Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting Studies – M.A. – taħt il-patroċinju tal-Fakultà tal-Arti

(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the degree of Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting Studies M.A. - offered under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts.

(2)Citation and Interpretation. In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Arts; “the Course” means the programme of study leading to the degree of Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting Studies M.A.; “the Degree” means the degree of Master of Arts in Translation and Interpreting Studies - M.A.; and “the Principal Regulations” means the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021. 2. These bye-laws shall be commencing in October 2023 or later. applicable for courses 3.

(1)The Course shall be open to applicants who are in possession of any first cycle degree from this University or another higher education institution recognized by Senate, obtained with at least Second Class Honours or Category II or equivalent.

(2)Applicants are required to demonstrate that their standard of English satisfies the University’s English language requirement as published on the University’s official website at the time of the call for applications. They shall further be required to have a high level of proficiency in their own native language (at C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). The offer of a place on the Course may be made subject to the applicants obtaining such proficiency qualifications prior to the commencement of their studies.

(3)The Board shall recommend to Senate the number of applicants that may be allowed to register for the Course, depending on the availability of resources. The Board shall announce the Applicability. (4)When the number of places is so limited and the number of eligible applicants exceeds the number of places available, applicants shall be selected using the following criteria and weightings: (a) language, translation, and interpreting skills test 70%; and (b) performance during an interview - 30%.

(5)The interviewing board appointed by the Board shall be composed of at least three members.

(6)The interviewing board may make use of electronic means of communication in order to carry out the test and interview referred to in paragraph

(4)of this bye-law.

(7)For the purpose of selection, applicants who fully satisfy all the requirements for admission by the 31st August preceding the commencement of the Course shall be considered first and those for who m places are av ailable w ill b e accepted and informed accordingly. If vacant places are still available, applicants who obtain all necessary qualifications after the 31st August and before the 30th September shall be considered to take up the remaining places. Course Duration.

1. The Course shall extend over four semesters of full-time study or the equivalent in part-time study. Programme of Study.
2. The programme of study shall be published by the Board after approval by Senate, normally not less than eight months prior to the commencement of the Course. It shall comprise study-units to which a total of 120 ECTS credits are assigned, of which 90 ECTS credits are assigned to taught study-units and 30 ECTS credits are assigned to the dissertation study-unit.
3. Students shall be eligible for the award of the Degree if they obtain the 120 ECTS credits as outlined in the programme of study for the Course with an average mark of at least 50%. Dissertation. 7.

(1)Students shall be required to submit an individual dissertation of approximately 20,000 words in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Board. The Board may prescribe a different length if the nature of research so requires. The dissertation must also satisfy the Board as regards content, language, and presentation.

(2)A provisional title for the dissertation and a detailed research proposal shall be submitted to the Board for approval by the beginning of the third semester of the Course. MASTER OF ARTS IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING STUDIES [ S.L. 327.707 3

(3)Work on the dissertation shall be undertaken during the fourth semester of the Course. Each student shall be assigned a supervisor who shall provide guidance and advice on a regular basis during the period of study.

(4)Students shall be required to have regular contact with their supervisor.

(5)Where appropriate, supervisors shall submit to the Board progress reports for all students under their supervision at the end of each semester of studies. Such reports may include a recommendation to either (

1. a)extend the period of study to enable the students to complete the dissertation; or (
2. b)terminate studies prematurely if the supervisor deems this to be proper in the circumstances, provided that: (
3. i)the extension of the study period referred to in (
4. a)shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Principal Regulations; and (
5. ii)the Board may not terminate studies prematurely according to (
6. b)until it has first given students a chance to defend their case. 8. The Final Weighted Average Mark for the purpose of the classification of the Degree shall be based on the results obtained in all components of the programme of study, all credits being weighted equally. Classification of the Award. 9. The provisions of the foregoing bye-laws shall apply mutatis mutandis to courses followed on a part-time basis, and subject to such changes as may reasonably be deemed by the Board as necessary due to the part-time nature of the Course.
