L.S. 327.714 Ordinamenti għall-Grad ta’ Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – taħt il-patroċinju tal-Iskola tal-Arti Performattiva

(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. - under the auspices of the School of Performing Arts.

(2)Citation and Interpretation In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires – “the Board” means the Board of the School of Performing Arts; “the Degree/s” means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D.; “the Principal Regulations” means the Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – Degree Regulations, 2023; and “the School” means the School of Performing Arts.

1. These bye-laws shall be applicable from 1 February 2024 onwards. Applicability
2. degrees: Types of Ph.D. Degrees Offered The School offers the following Doctor of Philosophy (a) Doctor of Philosophy degree; and (b) Doctor of Philosophy degree by Practice as Research.
3. The Board shall approve the research areas in which the Degrees may be offered. The specific requirements for the practice component of each research area for the Degree by Practice as Research shall be indicated in guidelines approved by the Board. 5.

(1)Applicants for the Degree offered by the School shall be in possession of one of the following degrees: (

1. a)a Master’s degree in the same area of study as that applied for or in a related area; or (
2. b)a Bachelor’s degree obtained with First Class Honours in the same area of study as that applied for or in a related area. Requirements for Admission 2 [ S.L. 327.714 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY – PH.D.

(2)The Board may also consider applications from applicants with qualifications at Master’s level or higher in other disciplines and possessing experience or knowledge which, in the opinion of the Board, will enable them to pursue doctoral studies successfully.

1. Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research. Taught StudyUnits
2. When the Board deems it necessary, it may require students to successfully complete a number of study-units during the course of their studies, and/or to satisfactorily undertake tasks recommended by the Board, under those conditions that it may impose, after approval by Senate. Thesis Presentation and Format 8.

(1)The Board shall approve and publish guidelines on the format and presentation of the thesis for the Degrees.

(2)For the Degree by Practice as Research only, the presentation of formally examinable practice shall take place at least one year in advance of the final written submission, or two years in advance in the case of part-time studies.

(3)Degree theses shall consist of between 80,000 and 100,000 words, excluding endnotes/footnotes, list of references, appendices, abstract and preliminary material.

(4)Degree by Practice as Research theses shall consist of between 30,000 and 50,000 words, excluding endnotes/footnotes, list of references, appendices, abstract and preliminary material.

(5)Students registered on the Degree by Practice as Research are also required to provide a permanent record of the research practice in an appropriate format, as indicated in guidelines approved by the Board, and which shall be included in the copies presented to the School and the University Library. Repeal 9. The Bye-Laws of 2013 in terms of the Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – Degree Regulations, 2008, for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. - under the auspices of the School of Performing Arts, published as Legal Notice 382 of 2013, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from 1 February 2024.
