(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - under the auspices of the Institute for European Studies.

(2)Citation and Interpretation In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - "the Board" means the Board of the Institute for European Studies; "the Degree" means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D.; "the Institute" means the Institute for European Studies; and "the Principal Regulations" means the Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. - Degree Regulations, 2023. 2. These bye-laws shall be applicable from 1 October 2024 onwards. Applicability 3.

(1)Applicants for the Degree offered by the Institute shall be in possession of one of the following qualifications: Requirements for Admission (

1. a)a Pass with Merit (or equivalent) in a Master’s degree in European Studies or in an area of studies deemed relevant by the Board, together with a pass at Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or equivalent in the first cycle degree; or (
2. b)a Bachelor’s degree obtained at First Class Honours in European Studies or in an area deemed relevant by the Board.

(2)The Board may also consider applications from applicants in possession of a Master’s degree or higher in any other discipline and who also possess experience or knowledge which, in the opinion of the Board, enables them to successfully pursue doctoral studies in European Studies. In such cases, a clearly motivated recommendation for acceptance must be submitted to the Board for eventual consideration by the Doctoral Academic Committee and Senate. 2 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY - PH.D. – UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE INSTITUTE FOR EUROPEAN STUDIES [ S.L. 327.736

4. In the period leading up to the upgrade to the Ph.D. degree, the Board may require students to successfully complete a number of study-units, and/or to satisfactorily undertake tasks recommended by the Board, under those conditions that it may impose, after approval by Senate. 5. The Board shall approve and publish guidelines on the format and presentation of the thesis for the Degree.
6. The thesis shall not be less than 80,000 words and not m ore than 10 0,00 0 wo rd s excl udi ng the l ist of referen ces (bibliography), footnotes, endnotes, appendices and abstract. Repeal

The Bye-Laws of 2009 in terms of the Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - Degree Regulations, 2008 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - under the auspices of the Institute for European Studies, published as Legal Notice 311 of 2009, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from 1 October 2024.
