(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – under the auspices of the Faculty for the Built Environment.
(2)Citation and Interpretation In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires – “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty for the Built Environment; “the Degree/s” means the Degree/s of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D.; “the Faculty” means the Faculty for the Built Environment; and “the Principal Regulations” means the Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – Degree Regulations, 2023. 2. These bye-laws shall be applicable from 1 October 2024 onwards. 3. The Faculty offers the following Degrees: (
  1. a)Doctor of Philosophy degree; and (
  2. b)Doctor of Philosophy degree by Practice as Research. Applicability Types of PhD Degrees Offered 4. The Board shall approve the research areas in which the Degrees may be offered. The specific practice component of the Degree by Practice as Research shall be considered on a case-bycase basis at the time of application and the Board shall also take into consideration the resources required to supervise and examine the work. 5. Applicants for the Degrees offered by the Faculty shall be in possession of one of the following degrees, normally from this University or from any other university recognized by the Senate: (
  3. a)a Master’s degree from this University, in areas of study of relevance to the Faculty; or Requirements for Admission 2 [ S.L. 327.745 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY – PH.D. – UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE FACULTY FOR THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT (
  4. b)a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture and Civil Engineering or any other related discipline, comprising at least 240 ECTS credits, obtained with First Class Honours or with Second Class Honours (Upper Division) in an area of study related to the proposed area of research; or (
  5. c)qualifications which the Board deems comparable to the degrees indicated in paragraphs (
  6. a)and (
  7. b)of this bye-law. 6. Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research. Taught StudyUnits 7. When the Board deems it necessary, it may require students to successfully complete a number of study-units during the course of their studies, and/or to satisfactorily undertake tasks recommended by the Board, under those conditions that it may impose, after approval by Senate. Supervision and Students’ Progress 8. Students registered at the Faculty may be required to participate in the Faculty’s academic programmes. They may be required to attend and deliver presentation/s during postgraduate research seminars organized by the Faculty throughout their registration for the Degree, and/or to satisfactorily undertake tasks recommended by the Board. Theses Presentation and Format 9.
(1)The Board shall approve and publish guidelines on the format and presentation of the theses and practice component (as applicable) for the Degree and the Degree by Practice as Research.
(2)Degree theses shall consist of between 80,000 and 100,000 words, excluding endnotes, footnotes, list of references, appendices, abstract and preliminary material.
(3)Degree by Practice as Research theses shall consist of between 40,000 and 50,000 words, excluding endnotes/footnotes, list of references, appendices, abstract and preliminary material.
(4)Students registered on the Degree by Practice as Research are required to provide a permanent record of the research practice in an appropriate format, as indicated in the guidelines approved by the Board, and which shall be included in the copies presented to the Faculty and the University Library. Repeal
  1. The Bye-Laws of 2010 in terms of the Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. – Degree Regulations, 2008 for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – under the auspices of the Faculty for Built Environment, published as Legal Notice 400 of 2010, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from 1 October
