(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – under the auspices of the Centre for the Study and Practice of Conflict Resolution.

(2)Citation and Interpretation In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires – "the Board" means the Board of the Centre for the Study and Practice of Conflict Resolution; "the Centre" means the Centre for the Study and Practice of Conflict Resolution; "the Degree" means the degree of Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D.; and "the Principal Regulations" means the Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – Degree Regulations,

2. These bye-laws shall be applicable from 1 October 2024 onwards. Applicability
3. The Degree shall be open to applicants in possession of a Pass with Merit (or equivalent) in a Master’s degree in Conflict Resolution, Law, Politics, Diplomacy or International Relations or in a related area. In the case of applicants who hold a Master’s degree from this or another university, where it is not possible to determine the equivalence of a Pass with Merit, the Board may determine ad hoc procedures in order to establish such equivalence. 4. Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research.
5. The Board shall recommend to Senate the appointment of a Centre Doctoral Committee, composed as follows: The Chair of the Centre (as Chair) The Director of the Centre, or delegate, and Centre Doctoral Committee 2 [ S.L. 327.750 DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY – PHD. –UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE CENTRE FOR THE STUDY AND PRACTICE OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION A member of the Resident Academic Staff The Centre Doctoral Committee may co-opt up to two other members from other Faculties/Institutes/Centres, possessing academic doctoral qualifications, if deemed necessary. 6. When the Board deems it necessary, and on the advice of the Principal Supervisor, it may require students to successfully complete a number of taught study-units during their studies, and/or to satisfactorily undertake tasks recommended by the Board, under those conditions that it may impose, after approval by Senate. Thesis Presentation and Format
7. The Board shall approve and publish guidelines on the format and presentation of the thesis for the Degree. Repeal
8. The Bye Laws of 2018 in terms of the Doctor of Philosophy – Ph.D. – Degree Regulations, 2008 for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the auspices of the Centre for the Study and Practice of Conflict Resolution, published as Legal Notice 339 of 2018, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from 1 October 2024.
