(1)These bye-laws may be cited as the Bye-Laws for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences.
(2)Citation and Interpretation In these bye-laws, unless the context otherwise requires - “the Board” means the Board of the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences; “the Degree/s” means the Degree/s of Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D.; “the Faculty” means the Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences; and “the Principal Regulations” means the Doctor of Philosophy Ph.D. - Degree Regulations, 2023. 2. These bye-laws shall be applicable from 1 October 2024 onwards. Applicability 3. degrees: Types of Degrees Offered The Faculty offers the following Doctor of Philosophy (
- a)Doctor of Philosophy degree; and (
- b)Doctor of Philosophy degree by Practice as Research. 4. The Board shall approve the research areas in which the Degrees may be offered. The specific requirements for the practice component of each research area for the Degree by Practice as Research shall be indicated in guidelines approved by the Board. 5. Applicants for the Degrees offered by the Faculty shall be in possession of the following qualifications: (

- b)a Bachelor’s degree of this or another university obtained at First Class Honours or Second Class Honours (Upper Division), in both cases in the area of study applied for or in any other area that the Board may deem relevant to the pursuit of studies under the auspices of the Faculty. 6. Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate competence in those skills required by the nature of the proposed research. Taught StudyUnits 7. When the Board deems it necessary, it may require students to successfully complete a number of study-units during the course of their studies, and/or to satisfactorily undertake tasks recommended by the Board, under those conditions that it may impose, after approval by Senate. Faculty Doctoral Committee 8. The Board shall recommend to Senate the appointment of a Faculty Doctoral Committee composed of 3 - 5 resident academics, including the Dean or their delegate, who shall chair the Committee, the other members being normally heads of department. The Faculty Doctoral Committee may co-opt up to two additional resident academic members if deemed necessary. Theses Presentation and Format 9.
(1)The Board shall approve and publish guidelines on the format and presentation of the theses for the Degrees.
(2)For the Degree by Practice as Research only, the presentation of formally examinable practice shall take place following the successful transfer of registration from the M.Phil. Degree to the Ph.D. Degree, according to the timetable specified in the relevant faculty guidelines. Repeal 10. The Bye-Laws of 2011 in terms of the Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - Degree Regulations, 2008 for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy - Ph.D. - under the auspices of the Centre for Communication Technology, published as Legal Notice 394 of 2011, shall be deemed to cease to be in force as from 1 October 2024.
