- 2 [ S.L.363.178 COAT OF ARMS FOR THE REGIONAL COUNCILS SCHEDULE Article 2 Gozo Region The coat-of-arms of Gozo – Għawdex, referred to as the Island of Three Hills, are Party per fess, Sable three hills in fess Argent, the centre on enhanced and barry wavy six Argent and Sable; ensigned with a moral crown with five eschaugettes and a sally port Or. It depicts a field divided horizontally: the upper two-thirds silver; the lower one-third made up of six parallel wavy horizontal bands alternately silver and black, the top silver, the bottom black. Upon the upper part, three slightly pointed hills in black, the centre hill higher and in front of the two hills. Above the shield is a mural coronet with five eschaugettes and a sally-port in gold. This coatof-arms originated from that of the Universitas – the regional government of Gozo (1350-1819) – and was first used in the late sixteenth century. COAT OF ARMS FOR THE REGIONAL COUNCILS [ S.L.363.178 Northern Region The design is based on a Maltese cross, signifying Malta, the northern quarter of which has been replaced by the fleur de lys, a symbol normally found on nautical navigational magnetic compasses. Whereas other cardinal points on such compasses are usually indicated by letters S, W and E to signify the direction of those points South, West and East, North is usually signified by a fleur de lys. - Southern Region The design of the shield of Southern Region is based on the Mediterranean sea in blue with white waves. In the centre the rayed sun in golg, the four cardinal points enhanced. The southern-most divided vertically in the ancient colours of Malta, white and red. - [ S.L.363.178 Eastern Region The Coat of Arms shows in Chief the Sun rising, with reference to the Eastern Region. In the Middle there is a Horizontal Fess on which there is an orange Blossom from which emerge four oranges which refer to the localities from which they emerged from the Parish of Birkirkara. The Bridge is that of Madliena which means the Union of the Coastal Localities with those of the Countryside. The seven waves at the bottom of the Shield refer to the Locations Adjacent to the Sea. Blazon: Azure a bridge or standing on waves azure and argent. In centre, a fess gules bordered Argent. On the fess an orange blossom or form which four orange fruits sprout. - The Star is the planet Venus which is known as ‘The West Star’. The Colour of the sun is golden, which symbolizes generosity, faith, and energy. Red Background – Colour the sky when it is reddish at sunset. It is a sign of positive outlook. Blue inner doors – A colour that is also found in the West, which symbolises the peace, calm and silence of the West of Malta. The Fortification – The Fortification consists of a main gate that symbolises the Old City of Malta, Mdina, on both sides there are two windows that symbolize the other two cities which are Siġġiewi and Żebbuġ. At the top we find seven laces symbolizing the other seven localities that are part of the Western Region. This shows the ideal union between the cities and localities of the Region for the benefits of the citizens of the West. Fortification is the colour Gold means - Generosity, Faith, Energy as well as Strength. Blazon: Gules, a fortified wall in gold and with seven merlons of the same colour. - [ S.L.363.178 Port Region Argent six escutcheons Gules arranged fesswise (3,2,1), upon a chief Sable below three mural crowns of three towers arranged fesswise two mural crowns of four towers similarly arranged all Or. Above the shield is a mural crown of five towers Or. In the aforesaid Arms, the escutcheons represent the six villages which are members of the Port Regional Council, that is to say Floriana, Kalkara, Fgura, Paola, Tarxien and Xgħajra, the mural crowns of three towers represent the three small cities which are members of the said Council, that is to say Cospicua, Senglea and Żabbar while the mural crowns of four towers represent the two larger cities which are members of the said Council, that is to say Valletta and Vittoriosa. 7
