TRAINING SCHOOL FOR MIDWIVES [ S.L.458.13 1 SUBSIDIARY LEGISLATION 458.13 TRAINING SCHOOL FOR MIDWIVES REGULATIONS 13th August, 1971 LEGAL NOTICE 55 of 1971, as amended by: Legal Notices 87 of 1971, 103 of 1974 and 41 of 1975. 1. The title of these Regulations is the Training School for Midwives Regulations. Title. 2. In these Regulations, "training school" and "school" mean a training school for midwives, approved by the Council for Nurses and Midwives. Interpretation. Amended by: L.N. 103 of 1974. 3. The training school shall be open to female candidates only, and no candidate shall be admitted to such school unless - Conditions for admission. Substituted by: L.N. 87 of 1971. - a)she is not under twenty-one years of age nor over thirty-five years of age; (
- b)her name is entered in the general part of the register of nurses kept by the Council for Nurses and Midwives; (
- c)she has, for not less than six months after having been so registered, practised as a nurse in a general hospital or in any other institution recognised for this purpose by the said board; and (
- d)she has been approved at a selective interview. 4. No candidate shall he allowed to join the training school unless she is certified medically fit to the satisfaction of the Chief Government Medical Officer. Candidates to be certified medically fit. 5.
(1)Candidates shall be admitted to the training school twice yearly, and the number of candidates to be admitted shall be fixed from time to time by the Chief Government Medical Officer at his discretion. Intake of candidates.
(2)No course of training shall start unless there are at least three candidates who qualify for admission to the training school.
- Each course of training shall last for not less than one year during which course there shall be imparted theoretical and practical instruction in accordance with the curricula of studies approved from time to time by the Council for Nurses and Midwives, in the compilation of which curricula the said council shall be guided by the Rules issued by the Central Midwives Board for England and Wales. - Candidates admitted to the training school shall be known as student midwives and shall be under the direction of a midwifery tutor possessing a midwife teacher’s diploma recognised by the Council for Nurses and Midwives, and such tutor shall be in charge of the theoretical and practical instruction. - TRAINING SCHOOL FOR MIDWIVES 8.
(1)During the course of training, students shall be required to work in the wards, in the operating theatre and in the out-patients’ division of the obstetric department of a hospital approved for the purposes of these regulations by the Council for Nurses and Midwives, and may be required to perform night duties at regular intervals.
(2)Student midwives may also be required to attend, under guidance, at domiciliary confinements and to gain experience in the care of mother and baby in the home. Assessment examination. Amended by: L.N. 41 of 1975. 9.
(1)During the last two weeks of the course of training there shall be an examination, known as the assessment examination, which shall consist of a written and of a pratical and oral test.
(2)The written test shall consist of (
- a)a paper containing questions on midwifery and paediatrics, and (
- b)a paper containing questions on social services.
(3)The written test shall be followed by a practical and oral test dealing with all aspects of midwifery, paediatrics and social services, at which test candidates will be required to present to the examiners their record book of instruction and practical work, and detailed case histories of three patients attended during the course. (1)A candidate shall not be deemed to have passed the assessment examination unless she shall have obtained a pass mark in both papers of the written test as well as in the practical and oral test.
(2)For the purpose of this regulation, a pass mark means not less than fifty per cent of the maximum mark obtainable. Supplementary examination. Amended by: L.N. 103 of
- A candidate who fails in the assessment examination may be allowed by the Chief Government Medical Officer to attend the school for a further period of training so as to enable her to sit for the next assessment examination, in the test in which she will have failed to obtain the required pass mark, due to he held in accordance with these regulations. (1)The assessment examination shall be conducted by a board of examiners to be appointed by the Council for Nurses and Midwives. Holding of assessment examination. 13. The assessment examination shall be held twice yearly and a previous notice of the date of commencement shall be exhibited on the notice board of the training school at least three weeks before such date.
(2)The board of examiners shall submit the examination result to the Council for Nurses and Midwives for approval and ratification prior to publication. TRAINING SCHOOL FOR MIDWIVES [ S.L.458.13 14.
(1)A student who intends taking the assessment examination shall submit to the Council for Nurses and Midwives an application on a form obtainable at the Department of Health, accompanied by the prescribed fee. 3 Application and eligibility to sit at assessment examination. (2)Each application shall be accompanied by a certificate signed by the midwifery tutor in charge of the training school to the effect that the student has attended her full course of training at the school, and that her conduct has been satisfactory throughout the course.
(3)A student who is not granted such a certificate may apply for that certificate after a further period of training as allowed by the Chief Government Medical Officer in his discretion. 15.
(1)Students who, on the completion of the full period of training, pass the assessment examination shall be awarded a certificate signed by the chairman of the Council for Nurses and Midwives to the effect that the candidate therein mentioned has undergone the prescribed course of training at the school and has been approved at the prescribed examination.
(2)Such certificate shall be deemed to be the certificate of competency in midwifery as is referred to in the Health Care Professions Act. Certiticate to be awarded to successful candidates. Amended by: L.N. 103 of 1974. Cap. 464.
