  1. The title of these regulations is the Conversion of Civil Unions into Marriage Regulations Citation.
  2. requires: Interpretation. In these regulations, unless the context otherwise "Act" means the Civil Unions Act; "civil union" means civil unions celebrated and registered in accordance with the Act; "conversion" means the conversion of a civil union into marriage in accordance with article 11 of the Act and the provisions these regulations; "Registrar" shall have the same meaning as assigned to it in the Marriage Act and for the purposes of these regulations shall also include Diplomatic or Consular Representatives for Malta. (1)Partners in a civil union who wish to convert their civil union into marriage shall make an appointment with the Registrar at the office of the Public Registry Malta: Procedure. Provided that partners to a civil union who are not residing in Malta may convert their civil union into marriage at any Diplomatic or Consular Representation for Malta.
(2)The following is required for the conversion of a civil union into marriage: (
  1. a)a sworn declaration requesting the conversion signed by both parties before the Registrar, in accordance with regulation 4; (
  2. b)the presentation of valid identification documents; (ċ) a legal copy of the act of the civil union which is to be converted; (
  3. d)the payment of the fee for conversion.
(3)Once the Registrar is satisfied that all the requirements for the conversion have been fulfilled, the Registrar shall make an annotation on the act of civil union to the effect that such civil union has been lawfully converted into marriage. 2 [ S.L.530.02 CONVERSION OF CIVIL UNIONS INTO MARRIAGE
(4)The Registrar shall then issue an act of marriage, which shall be dated with the date in which the civil union was contracted, and the Registrar shall make an annotation on the act of marriage to the effect that such act is the result of a conversion. (1)There shall be a form, with the title ‘Sworn Declaration of Conversion of Civil Union into Marriage’, which shall be the form used for conversions for the purposes of article 11 of the Act and the provisions of these regulations, and shall be the form as provided in the Schedule annexed to these regulations
(2)The declaration of conversion from civil union into marriage shall be made on oath, and signed by each of the parties before the Registrar, stating that all of the information given for the purposes of the conversion is true.
