What is an MCP connector, explained for lawyers

How it works, without the technical jargon

Think of an AI assistant as a trainee solicitor with an excellent memory but no access to the library. An MCP connector is a library pass. When asked a question, the trainee goes to the shelf, finds the relevant provision, reads it, and answers with a reference to the page. In this case, the library is Europaius, and the pass is the connector address plus login.

Technically, the server offers the AI a set of tools, each with a description of when to use it: search legislation, search case law, retrieve a section, compare jurisdictions. Based on the question, the AI selects the appropriate tool, sends the query, receives the text, and answers from it. In the response, you can see which tools were used and what they returned.

Why this differs from earlier plugins

Plugins and extensions used to be tied to a specific vendor: a plugin built for ChatGPT would not work in another AI. MCP is a standard supported by Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Cursor and others. A single Europaius connector works across all of them. You can switch AI providers and keep your sources intact.

The second difference is authentication. MCP connectors use the OAuth standard, the same one used for signing in with a Google or Microsoft account. You never type out a password anywhere; the AI receives a time-limited token that can be revoked at any time.

Comparing regulation with Germany or Slovakia no longer requires a translator; the AI works with the original text and summarises it for you.

What does not change is the essential point: responsibility for the legal conclusion. The connector guarantees that a citation is genuine, not that it has been applied correctly. That is why every output includes links you can open and read for yourself.
