What is an MCP connector, explained for lawyers
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard used to connect AI assistants to external data sources and tools. For a lawyer, what matters is this: it allows AI to read from a genuine corpus of legislation and case law instead of relying on its own memory.

How it works, without the technical jargon
Think of an AI assistant as a trainee solicitor with an excellent memory but no access to the library. An MCP connector is a library pass. When asked a question, the trainee goes to the shelf, finds the relevant provision, reads it, and answers with a reference to the page. In this case, the library is Europaius, and the pass is the connector address plus login.
Technically, the server offers the AI a set of tools, each with a description of when to use it: search legislation, search case law, retrieve a section, compare jurisdictions. Based on the question, the AI selects the appropriate tool, sends the query, receives the text, and answers from it. In the response, you can see which tools were used and what they returned.
Why this differs from earlier plugins
Plugins and extensions used to be tied to a specific vendor: a plugin built for ChatGPT would not work in another AI. MCP is a standard supported by Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Perplexity, Cursor and others. A single Europaius connector works across all of them. You can switch AI providers and keep your sources intact.
The second difference is authentication. MCP connectors use the OAuth standard, the same one used for signing in with a Google or Microsoft account. You never type out a password anywhere; the AI receives a time-limited token that can be revoked at any time.
What the Europaius connector contains
- Complete Czech legislation with historical versions and citation links between sections.
- Over 980,000 decisions of Czech courts: the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court including regional courts, the Constitutional Court, and optionally decisions of district and regional courts from justice.cz.
- Legislation and case law of 25 other EU countries in their original languages.
- Ready-made, plain-language explanations of Czech statutory provisions and a tool for comparing regulation across jurisdictions.
What this changes in everyday practice
Research that used to mean opening three databases now happens in a single chat, complete with source links. Checking a contract against the current wording of the law becomes a matter of one sentence. Comparing regulation with Germany or Slovakia no longer requires a translator; the AI works with the original text and summarises it for you.
What does not change is the essential point: responsibility for the legal conclusion. The connector guarantees that a citation is genuine, not that it has been applied correctly. That is why every output includes links you can open and read for yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need an IT department for this?
No. Connecting simply means entering one address into your AI's settings and signing in with your email. Any user can do this alone in under two minutes.
Is MCP a secure standard?
MCP is an open standard, publicly maintained, with contributions from major AI vendors. The security of a specific connector depends on its operator; how Europaius handles this is described in a separate guide.
Does the connector work on mobile too?
Yes, as long as your AI's mobile app supports connectors (Claude and ChatGPT do). The connection is tied to your account, not to a specific device.
